I find the Brushwagg pretty useful actually. I usually try to drop a Gemrazer on it to pump it up to a 4/4 body. In following turns I can drop spare mana into it to make it a 7/7, which is a pretty hefty threat all by itself.

I hadnt considered mutating onto it. Thats a good idea, actually.

In other news, did you see about this? I'm genuinely tempted, for rather a mixture of reasons. Firstly, I can actually win 7 games sometimes. I reckon I could maybe make it through to day 2 with a bit of luck. I mean, I've managed 7 wins in draft before, a few times, and this isnt any different, is it? :D Secondly, I actually do really like the godzilla lands. I have a pretty strict rule about not paying for shinies, but lands have huge utility, and theyre gorram lovely. Finally, I want to encourage wizards to do this kind of thing. A free for all event where any old lucky bugger can win a couple grand is very good, and gives people like us hope.

What do you make of it?

New State of the Game is up: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/a ... 2020-05-19

In summary, Historic Anthology III drops this week bringing 27 cards for 4K gems or 25K gold. It will be the last anthology this year. However, the Amonkhet re-release is on it's way this summer along with the Jumpstart set (later in the year) which includes a bunch of reprints from older sets I believe.

Alongside the anthology, Historic Ranked is being made permanently available and will count for ALL rewards in both Bo1 and Bo3.

Cube Draft starts soon as well. Unlike regular Draft, you DON'T get to keep the cards, but it does reward you with cards and gold if you win.

M21 is coming. I think July is the usual schedule for a Standard release?

The various Draft and Event schedules are updated till the end of June if there is something you're looking for. Personally I'm interested in the Rivals of Ixalan Quick Draft in mid-June.

And the Arena Open competition that M_i_J mentioned above is laid out. The entry fee and the fact that it will be Tier 1 decks throughout makes me dubious about joining. 2000 Dollars sounds nice, but winning 7 games day one and then 7 again on day two seems unlikely given my usual win rates.

Bugger - I just realised that 8am-10am pacific time is midnight-2am here. On a Sunday night. The day before all the kids go back to school full time.

So, while I maaaaay still enter for shiggles and land, I’m less inclined to do so than I was ten minutes ago.

Today I did something a bit out of character, I built a Temur Reclamation deck. I'd seen a comment posted online about it (and have faced it before many times), but looking over the card list, I couldn't quite figure it out. So to better understand it, I built a deck based on one online and played a couple of games with it.
In game 1 I went up against a BRG Obosh deck. My opponent conceded after the first counterspell.
In game 2 I ran into a player I played a couple of days previously using a BU Flash deck. The game went on for quite a while with lots of spells being countered, but eventually I managed to get two Wilderness Reclamations to stick, threw out enough stuff to make sure he had no mana for counterspells and then hit him with a 23 mana Expansion/Explosion.
I think I have a better understanding of how the deck works now. It was fun, but quite challenging compared to my usual Aggro/Mid-range style of play. I can see it being totally hosed by RDW and other fast decks, especially in Bo1 mode.

I feel kind of dirty for net-decking though.

Noice. I’ve been durdling around in gold the whole season. My deck has a decent win rate (I think?) but I rarely get in more than one game a day recently. Interestingly, a mate of mine who started arena a month or so ago is now in mythic off the back of his one and only deck* - mono white lifegain! To be fair, he plays a hella lot, but it shows what dedication can do. Also interestingly, when we actually play against each other, his deck loses hard to pretty much everything I have. This isn’t a measure of ability, but a pretty clear demonstration that just playing a loooooot of games is how you get to mythic.

Also, I saw this today: what are your predictions?

*i mean that literally. He has one deck.

New banned and restricted, plus a change to Companion rules? Interesting.
I don't mind the companions so much, as people can just main-deck them anyway. Gyruda and Yorion can be irritating with their ETB abilities, but no more so than some other cards. Having them as a guaranteed card to cast seems somewhat unfair given that it's easy to work around their restrictions.
I'd be quite content if Fires of Invention, Agent of Treachery and T3feri went away to be honest. Field of the Dead too. I don't think that they need a ban, I just don't like playing against them so much.

Historic seems fairly varied, I've seen a few Treasure Hunt decks. (I ran into one while completing a UB quest for the day. I've never felt more justified in using Thought Erasure .).
I've also run across a collection of seemingly unrelated decks that I've nicknamed '101 ways to cheat Ullamog into play.' Now there's a pretty much insta-concede card if you don't have an answer to hand.
But beyond that, Historic has been a lot of fun. Far more unique decks than Standard.

So I guess we'll have to wait and see what the B&R announcement says. :D

T3feri has been in the meta for a good while now, and while he’s certainly annoying (and my god - you should try playing against him when you’re esper control. Brrrr.) he’s not game breaking. Any aggro deck will kill him, and other decks can all pack ways to take him down. Agent and Fires, otoh, is a bit more tricksy. Fires is a problem, regardless of what variation is being played. It can cheat in Agent, Kenrith, or any number of bastardy spells at zero cost. Agent, however, has been around since M20, and only recently became problematic. The issue is cards that let you cheat Agent into play before turn 7. If you’re just playing him naturally from your hand, any decent mid range or control deck will have answers by that point, and any aggro deck will have you dead before he hits the table. My feeling is that Agent is a symptom, not the problem itself. Winona, Fires and Lukka are the issues. Problem is, that’s 3 cards. Should they all be banned? Lukka is the poster boy, too. Are we set for a repeat of Oko, again?

Who knows. I await the big reveal with bated breath.

Also, fwiw, I’d like to see companion changed so that you have to mull to 6 if you have a companion in your deck. Or just make your opening hand 6, or something. Summat to remove the card advantage it grants you. That’d solve a lot.

Interestingly, while the companion requirements are printed on the card, the actual rules for it are not. This frees up Wizards to change the rules for companion as much as they like without any need for errata-ing the cards. Bit cunning, that is...

Once per game, any time you could cast a sorcery (during your main phase when the stack is empty), you can pay 3 generic mana to put your companion from your sideboard into your hand. This is a special action, not an activated ability.
Well I guess a 3 mana tax isn't too bad? You're now faced either not playing a card or at least not keeping up your tempo to put the companion into your hand. Hello discard effects. :D
Standard:
Agent of Treachery is banned.
Fires of Invention is banned.

Historic
Agent of Treachery is suspended.
Fires of Invention is suspended.
Yes, yes, 1000 times yes!
I'm sure Lukka and WINota will find something equally abhorrent to cheat into play, but AoT's ETB is awful. Good riddance.
