2016 Gaming Poll

Postby Primarch on Wed Dec 28, 2016 7:39 am

It seems like every year there are more and more games demanding our attention, but which ones get you excited the most? What are you looking forward to playing in the new year?

For me, Malifaux is probably still my favourite game system, though I never seem to be able to play it that often. :D Bolt Action is a close second and my collection of painted tanks has expanded rapidly over the past year. Third place is tough to call, but I guess I would have to say Black Powder. This Is Not A Test and Infinity are both awesome games, the small number of figures makes them very portable, but they lack the 'wow' factor of putting hundreds of models on the table at once.

So, how about the rest of you? Which games occupy your time and energy the most?

A difficult poll! The intersection between "my favorite games" and "games I have the most chances to play" is a bit weird.

First is Specialist Games (Please Specify: Epic), but you all knew that. I also think I do a pretty good job of drumming up games for this, as there are quite a few people locally who are willing to play, given the opportunity and the use of an army. Second is Drop<foo> Commander, but at this point to be straight-up my continued interest in Hawk games is going to depend on how popular they get locally, and my not playing Dropzone much in the second half of this year was related to that. I like the games and models a lot, and Auxryn is a cool dude and fun to play against, and maybe it's just a case of needing to do more demos, but when it comes down to it two enthusiastic people does not a gaming scene make.

I didn't vote for a third as the choice was just too bimyou. I've enjoyed the games I've gotten in of X-Wing and Black Powder, so they're in the running, but Other (Please Specify: Advanced Space Crusade) has given me a lot of gaming enjoyment this year as well. Hmm, as I think of it I think I should have gone ahead and clicked Other, but oh well.
Miniatures painted in 2017:
Fleet: 2 cruisers
15mm: 1 tank, 2 buildings
28mm: 181 infantry, 4 vehicles, 5 buildings
Currently focusing on: 40K, Malifaux

#1 Warmahordes - In part because I play it the most, which makes me happy when I think of it, and I seem to be a semi-decent player, and remember the rules most of the time, which helps me like it too. I like that there is a rule for everything, and it is faq'd all the time. I do think it is a bit over complicated and fussy sometimes, although MkIII has helped clear that up a bit. I am not a huge fan of the fluff, although I do like my Protectorate faction.

#2 Malifaux - it has no right to be my second favorite game. It is even more complicated than Warmahordes, I forget rules all the time, and I almost never get a chance to play it. But anyway I love the setting and overall feel of the game, and I have fun playing it even when I lose horribly.

#3 is really hard to say. It is actually probably Blood Bowl right now, so I chose the wrong thing on the survey (Other). But it is simple to learn, fun to play, not overly competitive while still being quite strategic.

# 1 Black Powder currently. I've been engrossed with the whole French Revolutionary/Napoleonic period. I've also have interest in expanding into The American Revolution/ Frnch and Indian war. I've also got interest in trying Pike and Shot with Sengoku Japanese miniatures. (I'd do English Civil War in a heartbeat, too.) I like generally the rules and ease of play. Also there is fine support from Warlord Games and a range of great model makers.

#2 Bolt Action. I like World War II also as a historical period. I also like the game design, the ease of play and the general balance between forces. I do find the game lacks a an element of movement (as in Epic and Black Powder) and tactical depth (as in Flames of War) that allows for more tactical options. However the trade off for the ease of play is great.

#3 Epic/Nercumunda/Gorkamorka. I really like Epics gameplay, the setting (40k baby!) and the relative balance and tactical variation of the factions. And great fan support. Nercumunda is the 40k setting with the awesome setting for my cultists to fully live out their short and pathetic lives. Gorkamorka is great fun to play with the group of guys playing it.

* My caveat is for Flames of War, the game system I am by far the most enamored with. However, I have ceased playing the game for 2 years so I kind of have written it off as a system I play.
Models Painted, 2014
24 10mm vehicles, 30 10mm figures
11 15mm vehicles, 71 15mm models, 4 guns
124 28mm models
9 28mm vehicles or monsters (1 Sturmgeschetz III, 1 Sdkfz 250/9, 1 Panzer V, 2 gyroflyers, 1 Rhino, 1 Daemon Prince, 1 Defiler, 1 Helbrute)

I went for Black Powder/Hail Caesar, 40k and X Wing. Which surprised me actually.

-edit- I'm thinking more 40k in an edition where everyone is on the same page if that still exists? :)

Mailfaux and Blood Bowl would be quite high in my estimation also. Flames of War I still like as my go to WW2 game.

Space Hulk is probably my favourite GW game though and I have a soft spot for Talisman.

@Job - Polls only have space for 10 options, FoW was one I considered, but I haven't seen it played in ages.
@Ashmie - Everyone on the same page for 40K? Maybe One Page 40K could work? :D

I could have pushed 'Other' but consciously chose a different #3. I still like the system, but it isn't my my Top 3 currently to look forward to play in 2017.

To be honest, I'd like to play what people play rather than what I want to play. I enjoy a range of games we all play and I enjoy every game we all play at least to some level. I like games : ) (minis and history, too. Oh, people, too. :)

I found it quite easy to pick the first 2 - Bolt Action and Malifaux. I enjoy the historical aspect of Bolt Action, and with Malifaux the lack of nice and the way it challenges you tactically is a great change of pace.

For 3rd place, I was deciding between lots of things I want to play - Infinity, Horus Heresy, TnT, Blood Bowl and Skirmish 40k - in that order. :) The first 3 I have invested in miniatures, so it will be good to get them on the table.
