That's a point! Still, a warband or two to paint up / use in another system / straight up use in AoS Skirmish (since they'll probably give us rules for them) will be hard to pass up.

Hmmn. The AoS skirmish useability is a good point.

Full reveal here (pre-order on the 20th) with a video that gives you the chance to revel in Jarvis Johnson’s mellifluous voice. But basically, sort of as expected, it’s the AoS analogue of Kill Team (except that, unlike KT, the rules seem pretty different to AoS proper). Of note is the fact that there will be full support for many of the non-chaos AoS factions, so they *may* be positioning it as a replacement for the WD-only, somewhat ad hoc AoS skirmish.

I’m still not really excited about it as a stand alone game, and my hobby money being spoken for in July helps avoid the temptation of buying it, heh. I’ll probably pick up a pdf of the core book and see what I think about the system though.

If I can play with just what I have, plus a pdf, then I'd be up for it. After that, if it takes off a bit, sure, I may well buy in. But for now, cautious interest is where I'm at.

Yup. The kicker for me would be if it's a better skirmish wargame than AoS Skirmish, which again, WarCry was designed by the same folks who brought us Kill Team and Shadespire, and AoS Skirmish was a WD write up of how you could modify the AoS core rules for small games, so signs point to yes.

Plus they revealed yesterday the last release warband, these weirdos from the Realm of Light:

Which is a really cool look.

TBQH though, if the box set included any warband besides the beast guys (my least favorite) along the diving helmet guys I'd be a lot more tempted to buy it.

The latest and last faction just doesn't do it for me I'm afraid. I much prefer the bird and snake factions to be honest.
I'm not so interested in the game itself, but if the minis are multi-pose figures (I'm guessing they aren't but I would be happily surprised if they were), then I could see myself picking a few up.

Seems everybody's got one or two they dig and one or two they don't, and (and this is a good sign, design-wise) there isn't a lot of consensus about which is which.

yeah, I like the bird guys and the faces-on-belts guys, but the others are...fine, I guess?

I'll hopefully be able to actually pick some of em up and look at them in the glasgow GW store in a few weeks. I'm offski on Sunday, with the kids in tow, so wish me luck (ye gads. 24 hours on a plane/in an airport with a 5yo and a 7yo... )

And Elves everywhere gasp and clench their dainty fists in jealous rage. "We've been out-plumed!" Does not do it for me, but I tip my hat (or giant, glimmering, thrice plumed helm) to the designers for letting it all hang out. I would love to see all this new-fangled design finesse put into some old-school, old-world human merc types all puffed and slashed sleeves and crazy hats and wheel-lock pistols and things, proper Mordheim-y types.

Dangit, some of these mechanics look really interesting - and I'm weak against interesting mechanics.

Increasing the granularity of wounds (looks like a standard fighter has 10, and a typical hand weapon does 1, or 3 on a crit) is ditching a *big* sacred cow of GW games, and is something I wish they'd done with Kill Team.

The big thing though is warband abilities, which are kind of Saga-esque in a way. Seems like each warband has a set of special abilities which you activate using dice rolled during the initiative stage, some of which are keyed off of icons on certain fighters.

That said, I'm still not planning on going all in - probably the pdf of the rulebook and the Stormcast and/or Night Goblin cards in case anyone up at Ichinomiya plays, maybe a warband or two (they'll be 7000 yen sold separately, which is a nice sweet spot for a "cool painting project I may not use much in games" kind of thing for me).
