Battlefield Evolution,

Post by Primarch » Tue May 10, 2011 1:21 pm

Recently I came across a rule set called Battlefield Evolution by Mongoose Publishing. It is a core rule set used across a variety of games including WW2, Modern and Starship Troopers. Whilst I dont have the Starship Troopers version, I do have the WW2 and Modern books. The game is now out of print as, (IMHO)Mongoose aren't a very good company, they never support their products and their quality is usually lacking. However, in this case, the game looks pretty solid and well written and the writer himself has produced a pack of expansion books for the WW2 version.
Essentially the game is roughly the same scale as 40k. 28mm minis and about 30-40 guys per army along with armour and artillery. The basic rulebook contains lists for Brits, Germans, Americans and Russians. The game looks easy enough to play and 28mm WW2 is quite nicely supported by Bolt Action and The Plastic Soldier Company in the UK (25 plastic models for about 20 pounds). Bolt Action and West Wind do some decent resin tanks or you can use Tamiya's 1/48 scale models as well. The game looks balanced (a british rifleman is 14 points, a Tiger tank is around 650 points I believe) and easy to pick up.
If anyone wants a copy of the rules, please PM me. As it is out of print I dont see the harm in spreading it around.

You can still buy the PDF versions from DrivethruRPG ( http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/index.php?cPath=161_4483 ), or get some of the remaining paper copies from Mongoose themselves:

Looks like BE: World at War (the WW2 book) is out of print, but at the prices they have the Modern stuff available for, I might have to buy that. I will probably use the rpg drive thru site or wargame vault to pick up the rest of the supplements as and when I need them.

@AGP - Thanks for that, the link is really useful. Have you played the game at all?

I played the WW2 version - with the Gear Krieg supplements from A.D. Publishing - once, obviously in 15mm scale. It played pretty well, but we didn't play it enough to get a proper hang of it.
