Guys so sorry. I thought the event was on the 16th but it's this Sunday isn't it.
My wife has vetoed any wargaming this Sunday and even though I want to join I'm afraid I won't be able to. Very disappointed and I can only apologise.
Right now my wife and child have to come first in terms of gaming and she's made it quite clear she's not happy about me playing this Sunday. I want to save my marriage so I must stay home. I'm in the ball busting dog house again. I know how bad this looks as I have cancelled and done no shows many times. I have no excuses finally and cannot apologise enough.
Here's to better times. Perhaps Prim can bolster units or France can use less units?
What's Russia doing this Sunday? Have a great game and I hope we can play again someday soon.
Best regards,

Ash

No shame attached, chief (sez Dave, who ain't going either). Family's gotta come first. It's not so much about finding the balance between family and minis as accepting that minis will be second. Always. As this meme so eloquently (and poorly spellingly) says:

Wow. And then Corona happened. Just....crickets, all the way through to 2023...

Given that Ash won't be at the event, that leaves me with a bit of a deficit in terms of units available.
I make it that the French army has 1 more unit each of infantry, artillery and cavalry. Those odds aren't overwhelming by any means, but I would like to propose the following amendments:
British brigade commanders become Ld 8. Since most of the French units are either reliable or at least have Pas De Charge, they will be running around on Ld 9 or with free moves a lot.
The British start deployed on their long table edge. This gives me an inital advantage until all the French units move onto the table and represents the defensive style favoured by the British when facing the superior numbers of the French army.

@Asch: no problems man. If family stuff happens, it takes priority. I encourage you to keep working out a balance that is amenable to your loved ones.

As for the mission, it seems that the Britsh do suffer a disadvantage, but I think we can work it out. I'd like to keep the ld 7 because it would be our first trial and i think it has the greatest influence on the balance of the game.

I think just starting with all your units on the table is a huge advantage in this mission. There's a good chance units coming on the table will be delayed 2, 3 turns.

Says the guy with Ld 9 for all his infantry. :D

The AT books give an option in most lists to buy upgrades to Ld for brigade commaders at 25 points for +1. Given that you outnumber me it doesn't seem like an unreasonable choice.

A third option is always welcome of course.

If you want to do a pointed game we can, but it might be also pointed out that in the pointing the French Reliable attack column is balanced against British First Fire and Steady Line rules. Actually the British are pointed marginally ahead of the French.

It might be said by analogy that if French infantry have an effective Ld 9 on the march, then British Calvary have an Ld 9 on the charge. Should we weight Austrian Calvary and Prussian landswehr to have higher leadership then their French and British counterparts to make up for vagaries of national rules?

I also would like to try Ld 7 because it balances the game differently I think. I wanted to see if Calvary can be used differently, because at Ld 8 they are mostly ornamental to the game.

Anyway, I might point out that in the past we haven't weighted the leadership in games to advantage anyone. I'd prefer to tweak the scenario before tweaking armies. We can always say the British had a challenging mission or conversely if the mission is tough on the French. Balance seems like it should be afterthought.

Can I suggest in this occasion we let you set up behind the ridge in Wellingtonian fashion? Let the French come on in the same old fashion? :)

If you want to keep an element of maneuver, have a single British marching to the field? Or put the British camp in one quarter of the field an leave one flank open?

Or something else?

But if you really want Ld 8 we can do that too. :)

With Wellington, I can choose my side of the table once I've seen the set up, so I guess that is kind of an advantage. As I said, the odds aren't insurmountable.
Perhaps it would be better if I came on from the centre of my table edge? Otherwise one of you is doing nothing but moving for the first half of the game.

Not that it matters now, but making Landwehr Ld7 would mean they would fail order tests 21 times out of 36. A bit harsh?

True it is harsh. I guess it's a question of how cumbersome you think is good I guess, but I think usually the guys at Warlord play with Ld 7 on their Brigades. I always agreed with you that Ld 8 was good for introduction and it seemed to make games very quick, but I'd you don't mind I kind of wanted to try 'hardcore' level and try girding my loins. :D

I think coming in on the center or near the center is good. Maybe we should relay out the mission as an attacker defender mission?

I would be fine with the British loading up on increased Ld and some special rules to even the odds. Ld 7 for any of us is pretty woeful and would mean only getting orders through 58 percent of the time, before even taking in number of them you get off into account. It could make for a frustrating game if it's used too prevalently.
