I have been Trying to get people involved in gaming for the last 4 years and I have found that location seems to be one of the bigest factors for succsesful events.

Understanding what places are easiest for people to get to makes a huge difference about who makes it out to an event. In order to better understand the collective preference of gaming location please take part in the poll.
make sure that .that you vote for all the locations you would be willing to travle to for a 1 day event

For a 1 day event. Anywhere in Aichi, Gifu or Mie.
For a 2 day event on a weekend I am free, pretty much anywhere in Honshu is possible and further afield if I have lots of notice. I think you're going to find that this is true for most people. 6 hours round trip on the shinkansen isn't really an option for 1 day of playing. Likewise, cost is an important factor. I can play at home (ie Nagoya) for 400 yen on the subway and 500 yen for the entrance cost. If the costs go up above the 5000 yen mark (ie Osaka, Tokyo etc), I can rent a room and run a 1 day event myself. Having been to Osaka and Beppu for events, it was certainly a lot of fun, but in both cases they were 2 day things and I had plenty of time to prepare and in the case of Beppu my wife could come along and enjoy the hot springs too.

That is genius on the part of the organizer; Fortune if it was just coincidental.

As for locations, Nagoya is ideal for me, as I can arrive at events with little difficulty. (Except for lugging my bag of stuff around.) But I am up for traveling to place in the Aichi, Mie, Gifu (Chubu) region. I think venues like Badruck's church are very comfortable venues (the most spacious I've been to so far), so that further impels me to travel to a location.

Of course the most important factor may be to get a number of people together playing. It is one of those axioms, that trends tend to self-reinforce themselves: Groups of gamers tend to attract even more gamers.

So you're saying that gamers are like magnets? Wierd.

But you're right. If there are a lot of people going to play it is more tempting to go along to the event, especially if it is a long way away. Its a good chance to catch up with friends and have a bit of a chat as well as playing games.

I voted for the first 6, but really for me the type of event carries at least as much weight as how far away it is. I wouldn't go to a tournament if it was held next door, but I'd happily go to Sapporo for an event focused around one of the low-popularity games I like.

Frequency is a factor as well. I wouldn't want to go someplace more than an hour or so away more than once every couple of months. I'm just spoiled like that, I guess.

For me, no matter where I go, it's going to be a hassle having to lug things everywhere so I guess it doesn't matter much.

Next year I'm hoping to move to Gifu city and that should cut down on some distance issues.

My main priorities are Mie, Kyoto and Nagoya. Also a big factor for me is if people join my events I generally make the effort to go to theirs. A lot of the success of the rpg event this year was inviting people from lots of different events I had been to. I really had to promote to get the numbers in as most people were turning up as individuals hoping to get enough players for games. Luckily it worked out, hopefully next year will be as good too. After event feedback and popular demand I've decided to run 4 hour game slots next year so people have the chance to play two games in one day, possibly three.

For me, I'd pretty much go anywhere that I could manage in a day (without taking the Shinkansen) - my issue is more time than distance, since my role-playing group takes up most of my Sundays
