Epicstravaganza, too!

Post by The Other Dave » Tue Jul 17, 2012 10:28 am

What's all this then?

I'm thinking of organizing a second Epic event, some Saturday in November or December. If I can get at least 3 other people to take part, I'll go forward with getting a room and planning.

So sell me. What's Epic?

Epic: Armageddon, GW's now more-or-less-defunct mass battles game in the 40K universe, in 6mm (1:300 or so) scale. In my opinion, it's the best iteration of the rules for the best game GW's ever made. Some don't agree, but that's the joy of opinions, yeah? You get to play out massive battles including everything that makes Apocalypse so popular - masses of troops, huge war engines, comprehensive aerospace support - without needing a gymnasium floor to play to allow for real maneuvering. Just to give you an idea, we'll be playing at the standard 3000 points, and the list I've drawn up for the IG Armored Legion has 10 Leman Russes, 9 Basilisks, 3 Manticores and a Hydra, 3 Salamander Command Vehicles, 3 Shadowswords, 100 infantry in 10 Chimeras, and a couple Thunderbolt fighters for air support just for good measure. The Orks get even more. The Titan Legions get 2 Warlords (You know, the titans that are one step up from Reavers? Yeah, them. Two.), 2 Warhounds, 6 Forge Knights and a couple Marauders to make bombing runs. The rules reward tactical thinking, and capture real, flavorful differences between armies with a minimum of fiddly special rules. There's a really nice set of rules for command-and-control, too, if that sort of thing excites you.

I dunno, huge sweeping battles with gigantic war machines and masses of troops? Where's the fun in that?

what.

Just doesn't sound fun to me.

Those words, individually I understand them, but when you put them together like that it makes no sense.

Well, It sounds fun to me, but...

But?

I don't really want to get into a new game right now, you know?

Fortunately, I'm not asking you to. These events are, frankly, a way I've figured out for me to get a chance to play my favorite game. I realize it's a niche game, and don't expect anyone else to buy into it.

But I don't know the rules.

No problem! It's pretty straightforward, and as I mention above has little in the way of fiddliness. I'll be hovering around to help with the rules, and will make up comprehensive rules cheat-sheets.

I don't have an army, either.

I know you don't. I have 8. I'll lend you one.

Eight?

Don't judge me, man.

You can choose from Imperial Guard Tank Legion, Blood Angels, Titan Legions, Ork Warhorde, Ork Gargant Bigmob, Necrons, Craftworld Eldar, or Tyranids. Something for everyone!

So, to summarize: If I can get enough folks interested, I'll organize a fun, relaxed day of Epic gaming at the community center near my apartment in Nagoya, everything but dice provided by me. You don't really need to study the rules beforehand, you don't have to get into the game or anything. Just show up and be prepared to roll some dice and have fun smashing apart the enemy with superheavy tanks and gargants. You've got nothing to lose besides the 500 yen or so it'll cost to cover the room rental. Help me make this happen!

Me and my Astral Claws will be there with bells on.*

*Note, bells may not actually be 'on' or even present.

I'd...tentatively like to take part, but I have an increasingly spotty record of actually attending games I sign up for. How about, if you need someone to fill space, put me down, but if 4 other folks sign up, then I will happily bow out to folks more worthy than I. As I say, I'd like to go, but for all I know something will come up between now and then. As it stads just now, the Nov 3rd and 17th are out, as I'm working. 1st dec and 15thdec are also out. Other than that, though, it's (tentatively) OK.

I'll put you down in pencil. :D Slots aren't at a premium - I have lots of armies and lots of terrain (and Prim offered to bring some last time, anyway, in the unlikely event we somehow manage to get enough interest to outstrip my terrain collection), and there are lots of options for dealing with odd numbers of players.

For my schedule, I'd be looking at November 10th or December 8th, 15th or 22nd, so there's lots of fit with dates there too. I do realize it's pretty far in the future, tho.

Tentaculey yes with bells on. November I dare say shouldn't be a problem. Although I still owe you a game of Gamma World. Has Leslie been in touch with you regarding a session of that at his October event?
Forget about yesterday, don't worry about tomorrow because all that matters is today.

Yeah - my schedule permitting, the plan is to run a session at his event.

Be glad to have you if you can make it, and Spev too!

(Let's very very tentatively say November 10th - that's looking best for the schedules of everyone involved. I'm still not sure whether December will work better for my own schedule, is the thing.)

I appreciate that I'm at the bottom of the pecking order here, but December is safer for me than November. there's a speech contest I have to attend some time in Nov, but I dont know the date yet. It'll probably be a sunday, but I cant guarantee anything at this point.
