for once, I agree with Badruck.
Paint it in the darkest tone, then drybrush the frack out of it with a mid-dark grey in parts, and a mid-dark brown in others (be strategic with these parts, dont just splank it on any old how)
then use progressively lighter tones up to almost white for the grey and bleached bone for the brown, although these should also be progressively lighter in terms of amount-of-pain-applied. A bit of overlap is also a good thing. i.e. if you get some brown highlight on the grey bits, thats no bad.
A quick devlan mud wash at the end never hurts, mind you.

Buck Devlan Mud use anything but that cheezy copout of a color...
But to be honest it works well and it is easy... so go right a head and use the stuff... I even have a pot of it if you like..
I am going to give it to the first person that comes over and wants it...
Me iz gona boycott da Devlan mud color... me is neva gona use it or buy it again for as long as me lives...

I guess I am in the same spot as you Dom, don't know if you got your paint yet but I am thinking about where to buy mine.
I looked around and decided that I would like to paint with the GW paints since I am beginner, but I can't really order anything online (if I could I would order from wayland), so I would have to buy them in a store.
I went to yellow submarine the other day and looked around, bought some green stuff. They seem to have all the GW paint but it's pretty expensive compared to wayland. Do they sell GW paint at any other stores like, Joshin? And if so, what are the prices like?
*Edit
Checked the Desperate for DM forum and gave up, I guess the prices are kinda the same for stores. I'll buy mine at yellow submarine as well.

Re: Getting Started In 40k Means Getting Started In Painting
P3 Paints have some nice vivid colors that I haven't really seen mimicked as well by the "gritty and wartorn" palette offered by the GW line (which isn't to say they don't exist). P3 is what I mostly painted with. It's really smooth stuff, but you do have to dilute it some, because it is pretty thick, even when used as a foundation.
I've heard that P3 reds are way better than GW, and since Red is going to be a major secondary color in my SW army, I might try to pick those up instead of GW red pots.
Still, GW has some very nice inks, and I kind of prefer their metallics for some reason (I think they are more muted).
Not pretending to be an expert painter, though. I would defer to the other fellas.

I reckon GW reds are very good - they have a great range of hues, so you dont have to worry about mixing em. P3 inks are much better than GW inks, inasmuch as GW dont do inks anymore. As for metallics - Vallejo air whizzes all over everyone else. I have never seen such lovely metallics in my life.

not vallejo - vallejo air
the metallic pigments are ground much, much finer (about 10x so, i believe), and are much, much denser. The result is a paint which, while not exactly mercury, could fool an observer a few feet away.
I did a test where I highlighted Boltgun metal with mithril silver. I then highlighted the mithril with VAir aluminium.
Mithril silver is now officially my mid-tone metallic...
likewise Vair brass on gold.
