Aside from needing to carry your army, rulebooks/ipodule, dice and the terrain to go on top of it. Even the lightest home made modular table is fairly bulky. :D Having seen M_i_J's table, it is very pretty and quite light, but I wouldn't want to have to take it anywhere on the train.

If you are just making something to use at home though that isn't an issue. :D

Thanks for the replies folks, I'll probably be getting some of that blue polystyrene to make some hills and what not. but...
I mean if you have the money Jus, why not get one of those realm of battle boards. It would save you a bit of time and would be fun to use for all of us.
Ahahaha, yeah, thats kind of what I was thinking. The spevna shall not be pleased. I'm looking at the price now and wondering if ikeda san can do me a better deal. I mean, its its light enough and comes with its it own carry case. I guess dice won't bounce around too much if you sand it and flock it all nice like.

Here I was thinking of furnishing my new apartment to be with a gaming board. Surprise... I'm moving to Nagoya. I'll have to weigh the options before I decide to get it or build my own because as you all know, key money, plus upfront rent, consultation fee, not to mention penalty fee for leaving current adress and a cleaning fee is staggering....Not to mention I owe the Japanese pension office a grand or 2 in back pay.

ah, but the game board is so cool!

Off on a tangent here;

You don't have to pay the full cleaning fee, in some cases not at all. You are under no legal obligation to pay it. I paid for some damage ( that I had caused ) but things like tatami wear and tear, and faded paper in sliding doors we refused to pay for.

What spev said. When I moved out I paid for the hole I made in a wall (gaming table got knocked over - my old, heavy one) but other than that we got our deposit back.

Back on topic, that's an astounding price for the citadel board. Why not get a zuzzy mat and make some hills? Easier to carry and far cheaper.

Fushimi baby! well thats what it says in the address, but its actually closer to Osu. My new job officially starts in september but they have me doing some part time stuff from august 1st and just as well. I need the yen.

Enough space for gaming Im hoping, so back to battle board building... or buying.

Build!Build!Build!Build!Build!

Seriously - there's great satisfaction to be had from designing your own games table. Try sketching out a few ideas. Think about locations you might want to do - desert, swamp, industrial (very terrain heavy, that one), foresty field, alien crystal forest, the skeletal death fields of Xar, whatever. There are a few really bitching good sites out there f you jeered tutorials and stuff :)

Even notre dame. Hmmm...

Or you could do use your net-fu and lateral thinking and find these...

I saw some in Toyokawa Joshin a while ago. They are 2'x3' layout boards meant for model railways but would do well as the base for semi-permanent gaming table. Both Kato and Tomix (Japanese model train manufacturers) make them and both are about the same price. The ones I saw had special screws so you can join together a number of boards. 4 would give you a perfect 6'x4' gaming board. IMHO a nice compromise between GW's cool but hideously expensive board and making something yourself. Just need sand, PVA and cheap craft paint. You could easily add some permanent hills etc to if you so desired.

BTW I have two 6'x2' office/classroom tables + a GW battlemat + a couple of Zuzzy mats
