How about a bit less homophobic invective and a bit more painting advice.

Don't paint space marines pink. It looks gay
(unless of course youre aiming for gay marines, in which case I recommend sculpting little handbags onto them too, for keeping their little bolt pistols in.)
*edit* some of my best mates are gay! lea'me alone, you and yer gorramed political correctness gestapo!

Pink is a very hard color to make look good. Airbrush makes painting marines a breez.

Re: Getting Started In 40k Means Getting Started In Painting
OK, ok, back on topic:
painting advice for a fledgling orc warpainter:
1) as Frans says, do not aim for a golden daemon winner in your first week. Or even first decade. Aim for:
1st mini: get the paint in the right places. try not to choose horrible colours. keep things neat and tidy.
2nd mini: as above, but add basic highlights and shading.
3rd mini: as above, but better, cos youll have made mistakes with #2.
4th and thereafter: as above, but with more layers of shading and highlighting.
2) do not screw up your brushes. Keep one for painting and one for mixing. Wash them all the freakin' time. Only ever put the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the bristles in the paint. Use two washpots for water.
3) the correct sequence for painting is:
use your mixing brush:
1: put paint on palette, either via dropper bottle or brush. Close paint pot.
2: wash brush in water pot 1, then water pot 2.
3: add a wee bitty water to the paint in your pallete. mix it.
4: wash brush in water pot 1, then water pot 2.
5: put brush in mouth. Form the tip to a point with your lips.
swap brushes. now use your good brush. (wetted and pointed, ready to go)
6: take some paint from your palette with the very tip of the brush.
7: draw the brush lightly over a tissue, removing a fair bit of paint. You should be left with what looks like a brush with little to no paint on it.
8: apply paint to miniature. dont take more than about 5 ~ 10 seconds over this. never "stab" the brush at the mini. always draw it smoothly across the surface (either back along the line of the brush, or sideways is ok, too)
9: wash brush in water pot 1, then water pot 2.
repeat steps 5 ~ 9 until coverage is complete. (all things being equal, you'll be doing this every 5 ~ 10 seconds or so). Obviously if you wanna change colours then ya gotta go back to step 1...
I dont mean to be patronising here (altho i daresay it appears so), i just wanted to make it clear how often the brush gets washed, as well as stuff like never painting directly from the pot, and the need for brushlicking.
hope this is helpful

Re: Getting Started In 40k Means Getting Started In Painting
If the brushlicking thing seems unappealing or you just dont like the taste, try putting the brush into your palm, over your lifeline and gently closing your hand over it. Slowly pull the brush out whilst giving it a gentle twist to re-point your brush. This works best if the brush is slightly damp.me_in_japan wrote:I dont mean to be patronising here (altho i daresay it appears so), i just wanted to make it clear how often the brush gets washed, as well as stuff like never painting directly from the pot, and the need for brushlicking.

Honestly, I can see why it might not be appealing, but its a question of sensitivity. Your mouth is far more delicate than your hands, and its not like you actually dribble on it. saliva does not at any point get involved in the process. As for taste, it shouldnt taste of anything. If it does, youre not washing your brush thoroughly enough. Ive always been a brushlicker, but watching the Jeremie Bonamont Teboul DVD made it clear to me that I pale in comparison to some people. I swear his brush is in his mouth more than on the mini!If the brushlicking thing seems unappealing or you just dont like the taste,

Re: Getting Started In 40k Means Getting Started In Painting
In all fairness to MiJ who is, lets be honest, a painting nut, you can get away with one pot of water to wash your brush in and one pot of water to take and use for mixing (keeping that water clean). So long as you dont over load the brush with paint you shouldnt need to wipe it on a tissue either. For a first time effort, just see what works for you. Everyone has a different style and method to painting and everyone will produce different looking figures. I'm sure I could paint better if I wanted to, but the extra time and effort involved puts me off.
The hobby can be split into several groups
The collector - People who buy everything
The painter - People who have to paint all their models before they can use them
The gamer - People who dont care about having well painted models and just want to play as much as possible.
The modeller - People who convert everything and hate playing with models straight out of the box.
I lean heavily towards the collector, with a bit of the gamer mixed in. MiJ is firmly in the painter camp. Figure out where you are and focus on what you love. The painting, sculpting, gaming, collecting bits are just optional.

Re: Getting Started In 40k Means Getting Started In Painting
There is no denying the homo-erotic overtones of the Space Marine fluff are very obvious, even more-so than those in "Top Gun" but that is a debate for another time. I was just labouring under the impression that this was a thread about painting.Spevna wrote:Hmmm.... Lets see....
