@Jye- That is a whole lotta lightning claws. Or since they are Space Wolves, they probably call them "Ice-w\Wolf Talons" or something. You really have a Contrast Machine going. You ought to try taking a couple evenings and really tidy up a character figure or two. You might find going back and doing a bit of blending and highlighting a very satisfying exercise.

@Jye - Pride of the Legion? That looks to be about 800 points or so you have there.

I did promise myself I'd learn a few more techniques and maybe fix up some of the earlier models once my backlog was clear! That was a couple of years back now but I'm sure that backlog will be clear any moment.

It probably isn't for me, tbh, or at least not yet. I don't enjoy painting, I just want to do my part for playing with fully painted tables. I know my models don't look very good in photos or up close, but they do the job at a metre or two away. And I really like the workflow - no palette, no mixing or diluting, just straight from the bottle while I'm concentrating on the meeting, podcast or audiobook (the Infinite and the Divine is pretty great, as it turns out, and yes I'm late to the party on that one).

But until I came to Japan I thought I'd never paint at all, so who knows?

I think it cracks 1000 just with the Termies if I run the Indomitus ones as Varagyr (with a couple I've already painted). I have another 13 Indomitus in the backlog too, there's probably a sensible squad in there somewhere. The Spartan is currently in progress, I've got plenty of Centurions of various stripes and then there's the box dreads, which could be up to seven depending on how things go (before we get into slightly more outre counts-as like Blood Claws as Veterans).

I think 3K might still be a stretch but 1.5-2K is looking pretty plausible.

Blood Claws should be okay as veterans model-wise. I'm not sure how I'm going to kill that many terminators and dreads though.

You're not that late, I just finished reading that book last week.

You might not need to, they probably won't win many standing-on-things competitions!

I spent a very pleasant weekend sorting cards and boards with the (8-week late) arrival of Nethermaze, so that was ok. Ive got a hopefully a good place to start Championship deck for the zombies and am continuing my “play every warband in order” thing with a probably pretty bad Rivals+ deck for the Eyes of the Nine, not that there’s much to work with there. I also sort of reacquainted myself with my Crusade force and out together a 100 power list which should be interesting to play. On the hobbling front, I’ve also been pottering around with my dire wolf for Titanicus- it’s just a little too hot, and turning on the a/c in my hobby room is just a little too much of a bother, to really get into it, but I’ve got all the decals on anyway so I’m ready to get weathering.

@Jye and painting chat - I kind of agree, actually, about the joy of painting vs the joy of having painted models. I’m not really a huge fan of the minute-to-minute process of painting (hence my predictable once- or twice-a-year bouts of downtime :)), but I like the satisfied feeling of a tricky job done well, which I think is a line I got from Good Omens or something.

Speaking of (and this is more for the thread generally than necessarily Jye in particular), something that’s been getting a lot of buzz lately is this guy’s “slap chop” method, which is basically a similar idea to my own contrast paint workflow, although he starts with a black undercoat rather than a white undercoat plus a shade like I do, which cuts out a step. I’d even say don’t bother with a wet pallet, and use a makeup brush from the 100 yen store instead of a purpose-made dry brush.
Feel free to call me Dave!

I have been using the slap chop/makeup brush technique on a few of my Malifaux models with some success but I still needed to highlight and paint some of the detail. It works great if there is a fair amount of detail or fur, et al. but it is not so simple as with large flat/bald patches.

Hey, I get it. They do certainly do the job and speaking for all us veterans of many battles vs primer-grey legions, thank you for your service. :D I'm like totally the opposite. I'll spend a month on a single figure, even sculpting from scratch sometimes. I enjoy the crafting and painting as much or more than playing the game.

@TOD- great link. Reminds me I need to pick up a pack of make-up brushes.
