It was a 9 but in my book the spit drops it to an 8 I never give out a 10 on CMON. I also do not open christmas presents until Christmas morning. It is a work of art and if something does not work on it I am not going to give the guy a 9 for not making something as good as it could be. Especially if it looks better before he added some o the paint and some water effects to the mouth....to be honest drool might have looked better.

CMON is the crem de la crem and therefour I almost never give 10s

I would give the guy a 10 on painting and 9 on Cool if it was on Dakkadakka.

an 8? eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh? I can paint better than an 8, for goodness sake. That giant is a serious contender for the slayer sword this year, and if it doesnt get at least a trophy I'll eat my hat. (assuming he enters it, of course. Pretty sure he's going to, though)

rubbish. CMoN is a website where (at last count) 173194 minis had been posted. Some of them are good, yes. Most of them are not. It's just a gallery where any old bugger can post what the hell they want. Voting minis down just because there are a few elite painters on the site is counter productive. As I said in my last post, 10s do not equal "perfect". 10s are just stand out minis which are excellent examples of their type. The rating "10" exists for a reason. Folk need to use it more. In fact, folk need to bear in mind that the only effect a rating has, at the end of the day, is to either encourage or discourage the artist from producing further work. That doesnt mean that everything deserves a 10 just to be nice. That'd render the whole system meaningless. But it is worth bearing in mind that if you "never vote 10" then you're essentially operating on a scale of 1-9. Unfortunately, if that's what people were intended to do on the site, the scale would be one number smaller.

But it aint.

10 is there. It's there to be used, when appropriate. I'm in no way suggesting that you (or anybody else) must vote 10 on this mini. I think it's a 10. You don't like the drool, so you mark it down for that. Meh, I reckon thats a bit kibishi, but hey ho. So you give it a 9. But to say you never give a mini a 10 is rather negative and unhelpful, don't you think?

As I understand it, it works like this:

10 - stand out example of a fine mini. See my favourites gallery in my last post for many, many examples.
9 - almost perfect. Has one or more little points that just piss you off, though.
8 - good. Display standard, but lacking proficiency in some technical points.
7 - still nice, but hovering somewhere between display and good table-top
6 - good tabletop. Basic, smoothish highlights/shades. Some detail.
5 - tabletop. Highlights, shades are clearly present. Faces are clear and not splodgy.
4 - as 5, but splodgy faces/other details.
3 - lacking highlighting/shading. Just a neat base coat.
2 - as above, but messy base coat.
1 - For reasons of not wanting to demoralise people, I've never posted a 1.

That's just my opinion, mind you. There are threads and more threads about the rating system over on CMoN, and the only thing folks seem to agree on is that nobody agrees about how the system should work. Meh, as long as folk keep voting, that's the main thing. :D

Like Badruck, I am stingy with my tens. I might have given one once.

I'm actually intrigued by Dave's apparent assertion that there's an objective way to determine the scores people give out on CMoN. :) Badruck and I have explained our criteria - I would point out that I mentioned two things that in my opinion are flaws - and the very fact that we now have at least three sets of criteria nicely explains why CMoN scores are worthless. That's even without the people who vote because the painter is their friend, or because they like the miniature rather than the paint job, or because they like or dislike a particular manufacturer, or simply people who like trolling public votes.

By the way, Dave never posting a 1 (for the purposes of not hurting the feelings of strangers?) makes just as much of a mockery of the scale as Badruck never giving a 10.

We I guess MIJ and I are just different people.
The way I see it.

10 perfect!! Emotion envocing work that shows creativity and is different than the rest of the many works of technical genius that are on the site.

9 technicaly well executed. And well modelled work that is creative but on many cases does not envoque much emotion. In the viewer.

8. Technicaly strong but missing a few elements of composition. Craftsmanship is good but over use or misuse of the techniques distract from the overall presentation.

7. Lowest score I ever give if it looks like it belongs on the site then I will give it a vote of 7

6-and below I do not look at these models. Because I reckon my best work is about a 6. Not much to learn from so these models do not get a vote from me.

This is quite a good point.

Hmmm. Well, in the interests of keeping things balanced from this day forth every time I vote on CMoN, I will only vote 1 or 10. I shall use a two point scale and be happy about it.

Luckily for the users of CMoN, I never vote on their site.

I did find it interesting that Badruck will vote 10 on Dakkadakka but not CMoN. Whats to stop people posting on both sites?

I think that the most important point is to be consistent in your voting method. M_i_J obviously has his criteris and so long as he applies them the same way every time then he is doing it right. Whether or not people agree with his criteria is largely irrelevant when it comes to art. Imagine if someone like Damien Hirst entered on CMoN, his 'art' would get some very wide ranging scores. Art includes a degree of personal taste, which means Badruck may never find his perfect model, whilst Damien Hirst can continue making piles of cash by trolling the art community.

Absolutely true, if I had said "I never...". But, I said "I have never..." which just means I've never seen a mini so shit that it deserved a 1. I mean, have you? When I do see such a thing, a 1 is what it can expect to get from me, though. The difference between this and the 10 discussion is that I don't know of anybody who votes 1, but I know plenty of people who advocate voting 10 from time to time.
6-and below I do not look at these models. Because I reckon my best work is about a 6. Not much to learn from so these models do not get a vote from me.
Btw, this seems uncharacteristically self-centred of you, baddy. I know for a fact youre one of the most generous folks I know. Why so stingy with the voting? The people who regularly score 9s and 10s don't need to be told they're shit-hot. They already know. It's the guys scoring 5s and 6s that need the comments and votes to steer them on their way to improving their painting. The gallery isn't about improving your painting, it's about improving their painting.
