lookit, ma! picters!

I managed a wee teeny bit of painting recently, and have been working away on Kbear's Lion Lady Lelith. Well, the lion bit, anyway. Being of a 40k disposition, I havent really done much in the way of wildlife before, and it's kinda interesting and kinda vexing at the same time, inasmuch as there are bits on it that I have no go-to technique available to paint it with. Anyway, as I mentioned elsewhere I'm having some trouble with the pale underbelly, so at the mo it's just standard shade-to-darker-on-the-bottom. Likewise the whole mini is still very much a WIP. Rough blends will get a bit more work, and obviously there's a deal still to go with it, but hey ho, what do you all think? I'm particularly unsure about the mane. Disregarding the slight glossiness from the ink (which will go away when I varnish it) what do you all think of the mane colour? I was aiming for dark and contrasty with the face. I'm not sure how to variegate the colours, tho, or highlight it in general...

I don't know how hard it would be to pull off, but given the forest type environment it would be living in maybe it would have evolved spots or dapples to blend in with the vegetation? Kind of like a leopard or jaguar? :)

Here is a picture of a lion mane if it helps :)

I think it looks terrific. Good colours, great shading and blends.

I think the mane colour is realistic enough. Check out this awesome chart on feline colours and markings:

My only suggestion would be to redden some of the shadows on the leather items. It might just be the lighting, but some of the shaded areas come close to looking green, which is often a problem when shading colours in the yellow range.

right o, some progress (but not a huge amount)

dapples: doable, but would take aaaaaaaaages and would risk completely screwing up everything Ive done already. Will consider it once the rest of the mini is done, but is unlikely (unless you rilly, rilly want em, in which case I will do my best...)

mane colour - I have spent way too much time this past few weeks looking at pics of lions. The one thing I can say for sure is that they come in different shades. This un is a badass lion, so he gets a black mane. It also helpfully frames the face :)

What I did today:

painted the leather saddle, painted the gem and dagger scabbards and straps, painted the teeth and claws. Painty his cute widdle pink nose :p

ps yes I can see theyre all off at a jaunty angle. Dont ask me - theyre the right way up on my computer when I look at the files. Bloody photobucket...

also - they aint really that dark. Tis just the iphone and the mediocre room lighting in my living room (as opposed to the previous set of shots which were my iphone in my rather better lit painty room)

Now: giant big shoulder pauldrons - what t'hell to do with em? I'm thinking to just highlight em right up to a very pale grey, but that's more because I cant think of owt else to do with em. What say you lot?

For the shoulder pads, keep them fairly dark I say, offers some contrast to the lion itself. Maybe a dark grey with green highlight to it to go along with the 'wood elf' look.

Anyway, today I managed to tear myself away from the interwebs long enough to do some painting. I managed to paint some straps on a handful of Napoleonic Highlanders.
 Bloody interwebs and it's siren call of time-wasting doom!

Whoaa. I feel like its the Lion King in here. :D

Work. But late the other night I put some washes and highlights on some of the Berzerkers. Tomorrow I might get to work on my models.

Today I made what may be my final 40K purchases!!

On eBay I won 6 Killa Kans and a Deff Dredd. These will go with the 3 Killa Kans and 1 Deff Dredd I already own. When they arrive, I will finally be able to field the army of my dreams :)

2 Big Meks
2 Deff Dredds
9 Killa Kans

Oh I will be a happy little Spevna on that day!

I second that :) I think the lion is looking ace! I agree also that spots would not be a good idea at this stage. Yeah, ACDC and the Rolling Stones say paint that mane black! ;) Oh, and I love the gem colour! Ver'a Nice'a! :)

@Job - In the village, the peaceful village, the lion sleeps tonight...AYEEEEEEEEE - I sure wouldn't want a lion sleeping in my vilage :o

WHat did I do today?

Well, after buying my eldar from the web there were a few touch ups that needed to be done. I tried to match the colour scheme by mixing ivory white with turquoise and did a pretty good job.
