Cool, though I have no idea how to paint those effects.Admiral-Badruck wrote:http://mayang.com/textures/Metal/html/F ... index.html
I thought this might be cool to share.
Thanks for that.

Re: Painting metals.
right - before it all gets too confusing...
the
was to indicate I thought badruck was chancing his arm by posting a pic and then fishing for techniques, when a more direct method mightve been "hey guys I want to paint rusty metal. Any tips?" The
also indicated that I may or may not know the arcane art of weathering. In fact (as y'all know) I do.
It's not a case of "do this, this, this and you're done." - there are lots of different weathering techniques. Ones I've tried include:
salt weathering. (for patchy paint)
1) airbrush a rusty or dull grey colour onto mini.
2) get some big salt crystals (like you'd put in a salt grinder).
3) spray water all over the surface to be weathered.
4) sprinkle salt liberally all over said area.
5) let it dry.
6) carefully airbrush your base colour all over the area
7) wash the mini under the tap (seriously.) rub it lightly with a toothbrush or similar to dislodge stubborn salt crystals.
superglue/baking soda rust (for big chunks of rusty bits. Very falling-apart looking.)
1) sploodge some superglue where you want the rust patch to be.
2) sprinkle baking soda liberally onto it. Blow off excess
3) paint this area dark brown
4) mask this area with masking fluid
5) spray the whole shebang your base colour
6) remove mask
7) apply rust coloured pigments to rusty area
8) do oil weathering/streaky pigment weathering on vertical surfaces
sponge weathering (for chipped paint effect)
1) paint the base colour on your mini
2) get a bit of blister sponge and dip it into some dark grey paint. Rub off most of the paint.
3) dab the sponge on the mini where you want the chipped effect to be
4) with a thin brush and pale grey/pale your-base-colour, paint a thin line at the bottom of all the wee grey splotches the sponge left
masking fluid weathering (for a controlled weathering effect. I use this more than others.)
1) spray the model metallic colour. Shade and highlight this
2) apply masking fluid wherever you think chipping would occur. the edge of the panels and around raised areas is good. Around rivets is not good.)
3) spray the base colour all over the area. Shade and highlight this.
4) rub off masking fluid
5) proceed with oil weathering/pigments
There are lots more techniques out there, and most of them are documented with tutorials and photos for those that can be bothered to look them up. I spent months chugging around the net looking this stuff up, learning it, practicing it, trying again. It's all very well asking for a quick fix, but doing one's own research makes one a better painter. Google is your friend.
or, to summarise:
