Yup yup. FW made a (very nice) Tau line for a rather short period of time. Very pretty, but resin infantry doesn't work too good at 6mm - unless you're very careful indeed, you quickly end up with a base of five sets of little feet as all the dudes snap off at the ankles.
Fundamentally, GW production of new Epic lines stopped with Epic: 40,000 in 1997*, which was before Tau or Necrons even
existed, so if you want either of those armies you'll have to make do. (I didn't make all my Necron vehicles out of plasticard out of a desire to stick it to the man or anything - they simply don't exist.) Hence all the third party manufacturers (like Onslaught, and Exodus Wars for the Necrons) cropping up - it helps that 6mm infantry is pretty cheap to produce.
*Heck, even Epic 40K didn't really get any
new armies - the last entirely new army introduced for Epic may well be the Tyranids way back in 1995, when they were new enough that the Epic army was the first we ever heard of Lictors, Hormagaunts, Biovores or Gargoyles. Epic 40K and, to a lesser extent, Armageddon got some resculpts and the new unit here and there, but no new armies as such.
