Where can I buy plinths (土台?)
Can anyone help me?
I'm looking for cheap, simple plinths for mounting miniatures on. So far, I've only found one or two sites that sell them at all, and theyre all about 10dollars each, which seems ridiculously expensive. Either wood or resin is fine. Glass cubes or similar oddities would be nice, too (I have a plan for a transparent resin block, if I can find one...)
I need ones about 30~40mm wide, and about the same in height. A wee bevelled base at the bottom would be ideal, but Im not fussy. I'd also prefer round ones, but if it was square or nothing, I'd take square.
Does anyone know anywhere (preferably in Japan) I can buy such a thing? I'm thinking DIY stores might be a better bet than miniature stores, price-wise, but I'm a bit lost at sea, tbh.
Cheers,
-dave
p.s. They definitely exist, as a few years ago I managed to win a painting compo, and Ikeda gave me a wee IG commisar on a plinth as a trophy. Dat's evidence, dat is...
pps - I've tried making my own, but finding wood of the right size and grain is tricky. Not a lot of wood shops round here, mind you.

Try Tokyu Hands in Nagoya Station next time you are up. Both of my local model stores have 'em too.

Re: Where can I buy plinths (土台?)
ah, the joys of the big city...
It's actually kinda tricky for me to go shopping in Nagoya, as the only time I ever go there is for gaming, and a big case full of minis is not conducive to a fun shopping experience. There's also the time factor - I need to be at Kamimaezu by 10ish to get started, and coming home I dont get back till fairly late as it is.
Anyway, tis nonetheless a good suggestion, so thank you. Where is Tokyu hands in Nagoya station, and whereabouts in TH is the plinthy bit? I might be able to check it out on the 15th, as I'm only going to be taking my 1500pt tourney army that day.

TH is in the JR station at Nagoya. At the front end of the station is the Takashimaya department store. TH is at the end of Takashimaya nearest the Kintetsu line. The store is spread across about 7 floors (4 through 10 I think).me_in_japan wrote:Anyway, tis nonetheless a good suggestion, so thank you. I'm not sure where the plinths are, but there is a guide on each floor. I guess they'll either be in the craft section or in the toys section.

I'm not sure what time they open, but going before may be a bit tricky.me_in_japan wrote:cheers. Ill try and have a gander either before or after the tourney, depending on when I arrive in nag.

You can always default your first match like the Madmiral
That way the two mighty masters of strategy will be on a level pegging.
On a serious note, does your friendly local modeling shop not have something? Both of mine do, and I live in the back and beyond, same as you. How about a trophy store or home centre?

My first thought was, how about a found object like a spool (as in a spool of thread) or such-like? Bigger Daisos will have a wood crafts section, too, which might have something cylindrical. Easy to get a hold of, and available in just about the right size for 28mm minis.

Re: Where can I buy plinths (土台?)
Cheers for the ideas, folks
Ive been working on a bit of wood i picked up off the beach a coupla days ago, and while it looks ok, its not quite what i had in mind. It also struck me that the lids from Tamiya spray cans are bang on the right size and shape, so if i filled em up with plaster or similar theyd probly work quite well. I'm still keen to buy some though, for the right price.
As for my local modelling store, there aint one. There is one place that does model planes and stuff, but thats all engines and gears and similar. Its good for Tamiya paint, but useless for actual mini display purposes.
Daiso might have something. Theres a biggish one about 10mins bike ride from here, so i might get off my ass and check it out tomorrow. Im on holiday at the mo - might as well use my time constructively...
