WIP Thread

Post by Primarch » Sat Aug 28, 2010 1:55 pm

Since the other WIP thread seems RIP, I figured I would start off a new one.
Here are some models I have been working on this evening. The Butcher for Warmachine and a Plastic Saurus for WFB. Yes, I know the saurus has some pretty big mould lines on it, I'll file them off future models.

@Prim- The Lizard could do with a brighter highlight to make the scales "pop"but as he is only rank and file he looks fine for gaming duties.

The Butchers axe head looks pretty good. The read is nice an even too. But there is a lot of red so it needs something to break it up a bit. Either the pipes on his chest plat need some kind of metal effect OR some black lining between the plates.

The axe head is:
Boltgun Metal
Badab Black wash
Highlight of Tamiya Weathering Powder "snow"
Yeah, I guess his chest needs something extra.

In contrast to Spev's comment on the butcher, I think it doesnt need blacklining or owt like that. What it needs for "pop" is highlights. Highlighting red is a bit of an arse, but is not complicated in terms of technique. basically, look at the mini from the top down, God-view stylee. Paint all the bits you can can see orange. (it wont come out orange, as orange paint tends to lack coverage. The end result will be more orangey-red. Then paint inside all those bits kinda orangey yellow. Make sure the orangey yellow is only wee teeny bits, on the uppermost edges of things. Imagine light going "ting" and you wont be far off the mark. if you just do those two layers of highlighting it shouldnt take that long, esp on only the one mini. Maybe half an hour? an hour, tops?

go for it :) you'd be amazed what highlights will do for a mini :D

The colours I used on this pic are rather exaggerated. Don't go as yellow as this, or as intense. Most yellow or orange paints lack coverage, so youd have a hard time covering the red anyway, but add a smidge of water anyway. If it ends up too yellowy, give it a wash with Baal red.

M_I_J's advice about highlights is solid and will add pop. But I still stand by blackling (or a bit of shading) as a way of adding depth. His armour is made of big metal plates so should have more depth to it.

As an aside, I'm currently working on this:

Image

It still needs a lot of minor GS work. All the knuckles need to be sorted out, as all of them were cut and pinned to reposition them (that was fun, lemme tell ya...), and things like the souls need to be GS'd so it looks like theyre emanating from the skull's mouths/eye sockets. That's a 50mm base he's standing on, btw. Ee's a right big barsteward, and then some :D

Anyway, I'm a lot happier with this pose than the basic one wot comes in the box.

A question: What the heck should I do about the pole in the flea's back? I was originally planning to make it a plume of dirty smoke, but am at a bit of a loss as to how to do that.

So, I have done some more work on the Butcher.
I have added some gold trim, along with some highlights on the upper parts of the body (blood red mixed with blazing orange, then blood red mixed with golden yellow). I also added some black wash on the boiler vents on his stomach. The coat has received some very subtle highlights, as has the handle of his axe.
