I see a lot of painted minis on my facebook feed, but it's rare that one in the comparatively early stages of a paint job makes me choke on my coffee. This is one. It's all painted only with GW acrylics, apparently. No colour shifty-wierd paints used. Just normal ones. Applied using some kind of wyrd eldritch power, by the looks of it, mind you, but...

To paraphrase Arthur C. Clarke's third law:
"Any sufficiently advanced painting technique is indistinguishable from magic."

Wow, yeah. I opened the thread and thought "pfft, color-shifting paints, mij is better than that," but dayum that's insane.

One thing that's occurred to me is that once a mini painter reaches a sufficient level, one has to wonder why they don't get started on flat canvas type painting. I mean, sure, they're obviously invested a lot of time into their specialist tool set, but looking at dem legs, I can't help but wonder at the kind of photo-realistic art that could be produced if Bohun there put his mind to it.

I think there is a big difference between adding colour to a 3d object and creating a picture from a blank sheet. Mini painting doesn't require you to create perspective, to be able to scale things or to give the image of different textures in quite the same way as more traditional art, ideally the sculptor should have done some of that for you. Sure, a good painter could do it, but it may not be what they enjoy. :D
Plus, minis are cool.

This thread seems to have gone all quiet for the past few months. Time for a bit of a reboot?

While browsing the Lead Adventure Forum yesterday, I came across this amazing fantasy project. It's (currently) 16 pages of pure awesome.

OOOoooo :o that's some cool stuff - right up my cup of tea alley. Thanks for finding and sharing it Prim. The effort he made with the background of the Black Order is great. :)

So, I'm not super keen on the kawaaaaiiii aspect of this (although to be sure I've seen worse) but good lawdy the colours in that white are ridiculous*. And I can assure you, that after watching the WIP for the past few weeks, no irridescent paint was harmed in the making of this mini. That there is all hand painted shiny.

also, credit where it's due, this is Yana by Neko Galaxy, painted by Lan Studio.

*the black is also stupid good  .

Yeah, that is a very, very, very nicely painted piece anyway you look at it. I wouldn't even know where to start on something like that.
