Day 17 - painting

Post by AndrewGPaul » Sun Dec 20, 2020 3:31 pm

Well, that's me up to date now. :) I've just started painting it - primed, then undercoated with Citadel The Fang, then I'll be drybrushing with Vallejo Sombre Grey mixed with increasing amounts of Wolf Grey to build up the colour.

Awesome! The metal Thunderhawk looks like a lot of work to put together, but well worth the time and effort. At 5kg, I don't envy you having to take that to gaming events. :D

Don't forget to share pictures when you're finished painting.

That's awesome! Also excited to hear it's apparently getting painted as Best Chapter

There’s a lot of pics there that I hadn’t seen before, and good lord but they are glorious. That right there is hobbying done old school and proppa. My hat’s tipped so far towards you that it’s come right off and I’m holding it limply in my hands while I shed a single hobby-infused tear of awe.

Started painting - a few drybrushed layers to build up the main hull colour.

Incredible! I didn't even know they used to come in metal. You'll need a padded suitcase for transportation but... worth it.

Ok, so, clearly these are famed in myth and legend, and as such command whatever the hell price the seller demands, but (if you don’t mind me asking*), when did you get this, and how much did it cost you?

*and if you do mind, by all means let me know in no uncertain terms.

I paid £400 for mine, three or four years ago. It’s not complete - it’s missing the Imperial eagle from the front of the hull, two out of four of the ammo feeds for the wing heavy bolter, the supports for the hull airbrakes (I used pieces from a Goliath Rockgrinder to replace them) and two other minor pieces, as well as the transfer sheet, certificate of authenticity, the box internal dividers and the keys to the box lock. It had also previously been partly assembled; I had to remove old glue and pins, and there a few areas that had been damaged.

The Middlehammer trading group seems to think you can get about a grand for it now; there’s been four posted there this year.
