3d sculpting

Post by jus » Tue Aug 15, 2023 4:40 am

This thread will chronicle my journey from novice sculptor to something better than novice, and perhaps one day my own cult3d shop. I intend to post here with progress updates as often as I can.

My current aim is to continue studying head anatomy and delving deeper into the mysteries of blender. It's been quite the learning curve but very fun (also time consuming). I begin to understand the appeal of sculpting busts and why people did it in ages past.

Current project: White scars space marine head for a potentially eventual white scars army after reading Horus Heresy: scars.

I used this image of GW's Kosarro khan head as reference

needs a little more cheek fat under the eyes and nose is a bit too wide.
facial hair version to come.

That's a great start Jus, and better than some I have seen on Cults. I have no knowledge about sculpting, so I can't do much except offer support from the sidelines. :D
I think there are a couple of other White Scars books/short stories by Chris Wraight, so if you liked Scars, they'll be worth a read. A White Scars army for Heresy is on my wish-list, right after GW selling HH jetbikes for a reasonable price and learning how to paint white properly.

@prim: Thanks mate! I'm glad I'm not the only one with white scar fever. You get a free head when they go to print! Which may be soon seeing as ....it is now mounted to a ball joint. Ta da!

That is looking better. He definitely needs the facial hair and/or a topknot though. At the moment he is a bit more stoic monk than free-spirited tribesman.
How long did it take to draw? (render? I don't know all the jargon).

Awesome work Jus! Having just gotten into 3d printing i can see the sculpting appeal (and having done sculpture at art school in the dim, dark, past, i can attest to how satisfying it can be). Looking forward to seeing more!

That's a good question! If I have a reference to look at like kosarro khan, I can probably get the base head "sculpted" (I don't know the jargon either)
in an evening. The professionals I see on videos can, incredibly, get a head done in about 10 minutes.

As I understand it, Its a lump of digital data and then applying more data to or subtracting data from the surface in the form of geometry! We're making art with MATHEMATICS! It's all very sci-fi.

Next I think I want to tackle a blood angel head. Noble, patrician, vampire.

I will prepare a deathwatch marine for mounting the head!
