Ace Kits!

Post by Mike the Pike » Tue Nov 16, 2010 1:50 pm

I just got some of the new Dark Eldar and I must say that they are really awesome models, especially as the kits I got are troops! Definitely one of my fave ever kits. However there are a few that are even better.

1) The WFB Giant Kit. As well as getting a great looking giant you get a ton of cool extras that you could never possibly use on one model e.g, Gibbets, fleeing peasents, squashed goblins...the list goes on.

2) The WFB Chaos Marauder Horsemen kit. Again tons of extras. The bare heads especially are fantastic. Great cross-army-system usefulness. I haven't even made the horsemen up yet but I still love it.

3) The WFB High Elf Dragon kit: Again so many options. Great flexibility. Great dynamic pose on the Dragon too.

4) Pretty much any of the FOW tank company boxes. You always get 5 different tank bodies and turrets (if appropriate). Nice sculpts and tons of character for 15mm.

5) The WFB Imperial battle wizard. Makes up two wizards, again with tons of options, heads, hands, accessories.

However there are a few less than spectacular kits out there too. Sometimes, it's just because it's old and/or it's just plain ugly but sometimes the whole kit just doesn't cut it. My least favourite, is the Chaos warrior box set. Individually the models are OK but a unit of 20 just isn't Chaotic enough. The poses don't have much variety for an army that should fluff-wise should be the most varied.

How about you lot? What are your favourite/least favourite kits?

I loved the Empire Free Company kit. There is a load of stuff in there, masses of potential because they have pretty much every weapon you could think of.

The new Space Wolf sprues are wicked awesome. You get 27 heads on a 5 man sprue along with enough weapons to kit out an army. The SW termie kits are great as well.
I also like the Imperial Guard command squad kits as you get lots of cool bits and pieces on them too.

I got a huge amount of mileage out of my beastmen box, and i dont even play beastmen. (ok, i have a mordheim gang, but...) Theyre dead useful for any chaos related stuff, and have brilliant sculpts. There are also two sizes of bodies, heads, and arms, so they can be used for marine sized steroided builds, or regular humans.

I am also very impressed with the new raider kit. On the one hand, its a finicky wee bastich to put together (seriously, an eldar tank has about 10 bits. this thing has bits in the 70s or 80s. Mental...) and Im viewing the prospect of another 2 plus another 2 ravagers with a certain amount of pessimism (too...many...spikes), but on the other hand, it all just slots together peeeeerfectly. No forcing things to fit, and in some cases, you dont even need glue (which will be very handy for transportation.)

so, for me, id say my best 2 kits are:

beastmen, for having such a plethora of uses,
and
raider, for sheer quality of engineering.

The new plastic kits are so easy to work with. I haven't tried a raider yet (heck, I haven't even ordered mine yet), but things like the Baneblades, Valkyries and Baals I have been putting together this year are so well made that I could do them in minutes if I didnt have to file off mould lines etc.

Well I have to say that the Orkbiker kits are some of my favorite models on the market... not only do the look cool but they are really easy to build...

I also have to give a shout to the Kroot very fine kits with lodes of cool little bits...

I'll second the space wolf kit and marauder horsemen, lots of wonderful options in both.

I also like the chaos knights for similar reasons. Lots of good options in their on wicked weapons and shields. I don't have one yet, but the demon prince model looks very slick as well.

Least favorite has to be the empire box. Yes, the empire has lots of inbred and ugly troops, but do all of them have to look like someone rounded up Gomer Pile and his entire family? Chaos warriors are easy to work with but like others have said, very static and not interesting. Last, Cadians. Few good modeling poses and super boring to put together.

With the amount of spikey/pointy things involved in our hobby, I'm suprised how few injuries we all seem to suffer. I'm still sure that one day I'm going to take off a fingertip with a modelling knife or something.

How totally appropriate for a Dark Eldar kit.
