Re: Mtg arena open beta
From what I’ve heard, Commander legends isn’t going to impact arena at all, although personally I think it’d be a good opportunity for a 20card Historic Anthology. Brawl Anthology, maybe? Just daydreaming, really...
As for the paper version, I’m interested, but honestly the speed at which new sets are coming out is starting to grate. We haven’t even seen proper spoilers for Zendikar yet, and they’re already spoilering Commander. I only have so much excitement to go around, and the sheer rate of things coming out is leaving me a bit numb, to be honest. I’m also very curious to see how much the Green Commander set is going to be. All the cards have good utility, and I don’t have any of them due to them being (currently) a bit on the pricey side (sol ring and command tower excepted, and I’m happy enough to have extra copies of those kicking about.) If it’s reasonably priced (say...3000en?) I might bite. More than that and I’m probably going to pass.
I’m not sure how deep I’ll go for Commander legends. I’ve still got 24 packs of M21 and 18 packs of Jumpstart (which arrived, btw) and am waiting on 36 packs of Zendikar. With Covid going on, I don’t foresee myself busting through the backlog any time soon, so do I really need to crack packs of Commander, too? Or should I just be buying singles. 13k yen (assuming that’s the cost of a 24pack box, a la jumpstart) can buy a pretty substantial number of singles.* I seem to have some time to ponder it before it’s up for preorder, so ponder I shall.
How about you? What are your thoughts on it?
* on which note, I picked up: The Scarab God, Toxic Deluge, Blasphemous Act, Sunforger, Land Tax and Cyclonic Rift recently, for the low, low price of about 3000en, which given their pre-double masters prices, is a bloody good deal. In fact, even post-double masters it’s still pretty good. All hail Double Masters. All hail Yahoo Auctions
*edit* I just looked up the going rate for the cards in green Commander collection. Holy crap, 3000en would be bloody optimistic. Probably more like double that. Hmm. To buy, or to buy singles, that is the question. Defo want a worldly tutor, though, and the library and muse are tempting also...

Re: Mtg arena open beta
I may pick up a few boosters of Commander Legends in the hopes of pulling some mana-rocks and other staples, but given the amount I'm playing and likely to play in the near future, I don't think I'll be spending much on it, or Zendikar for that matter.
At this point, I've largely resigned myself to playing with what I've got and shuffling through the 10yen boxes at local stores for the odd playable card. I'm not going to try to build a finely tuned deck (for any format), because I don't feel it's really worth the cost and effort to do so when the pre-cons with a couple of modifications are perfectly decent.
As for Arena, I'm functionally Rare complete on everything from Eldraine forward and I'd still rather run jank than put together the latest netdeck.
I just need to decide whether to put my WC stash towards Jumpstart, Amonkhet or a mix of both.

Did you try the Artisan event? I had a shot at it with a Selesnya Adventures deck, it was a lot of fun. It seemed a lot more sedate than Standard or Historic and I got to see a bunch of cards that don't crop up very often. To top it all off, the hefty chunk if experience points was a nice bonus.

Re: Mtg arena open beta
I did, but I'll confess I approached it in the same way as I usually approach these "free to enter and you can get stuff" events, which is to net deck the shit out of it until I get my wins then never look at it again. Azorius Flyers got the job done in double time, and that was that. I'm a bit short of time recently, so I'm focussing on getting to Diamond by season's end. Plat1 just now, but bugger me if I'm not getting matched against kryptonite every other game

Re: Mtg arena open beta
*gasp* You take that back! I do. not. run Fields!
I mean, I don’t run Fields decks. Yes, my Gisa and Geralf commander deck has a single fields, but that’s just for zombie synergy. I’m probably going to put it in my Rhys deck, too, but again, that single copy ain’t really gonna be a game changer. It’s the 4-of massive land ramp decks that are a problem. And now they’re gone. Yay

And I'm pretty sure you've played FotD against me in Arena with some zombie deck or other.
Honestly, I'm glad to see it go as Land effects are difficult to deal with unless you have a very specific set of cards in your deck.

Woo! Made it to Platinum with days to spare. Now to bumble around with jank until the reset hits.
