Re: Mtg arena open beta
got that in my inbox this morning.
Redeemed itself as:
God Eternal Bontu
Finale of Promise
Mesmerising Benthid
Nothing super duper exciting, but 3 very playable cards. I'm tempted to go make a benthid deck, actually. Seems kinda interesting. How about you? What did you pull?

I got:
Roalesk, Apex Hybrid
God-Eternal Oketra
and
Ravager Wurm
Not bad for freebies, though it's my second Roalesk.

Re: Mtg arena open beta
aye, canny complain about that lot. 3 good cards. Roalesk has a lot of potential, I feel. Maybe worth having a dig around the net for Proliferate decks? I'm sure there's something out there, even if it may not be top tier.
Oketra is the bane of my 4c dreadhorde deck, and I hates it forever, bagginssss..
Ravager Wurm is a fine top end for any gruul deck, and is particularly hilarious when matched with Mirror March

Re: Mtg arena open beta
How do you get codes emailed to you?
Also, what makes Oketra particularly good against your deck?

Re: Mtg arena open beta
Not sure if I did anything special, but I get emails from WotC about arena about...once a month, maybe? Probably gave them my address when I signed up for Arena? Or possibly I registered myself ages ago for some kind of freebie. I dunno. I'm on their arena mailing list, though, for sure. It might be just that your junk mail filter is over zealous?
As for Oketra, partly it's just the usual God-Eternal problem of them just not fricking dying, as my 4C dreadhorde deck kinda struggles a bit with killing stuff, and partly it's the zombie tokens that it poops out at a fearsome rate, again because my deck finds it hard to deal with.

Re: Mtg arena open beta
I check my junk mail fairly often and there's never anything from WotC in there. Since I used my email to sign up and for purchasing the start set, they obviously have it on file. Maybe I checked a box saying "Don't send me spam," or something. 3 Mythics are fairly acceptable spam though.me_in_japan wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2019 8:58 amNot sure if I did anything special, but I get emails from WotC about arena about...once a month, maybe? Re: Mtg arena open beta
Woohoo! I hit Gold level!! And just in time for the end of the season.
After getting stuck in Silver (8 losses for 4 wins, net 0 last night) with my Black deck listed above, I decided I'd try something different. I had planned to try out a Roalesk build, but today's quest was 30x Red/White spells, so I built a deck around Feather, The Redeemed. 7 Wins to 1 Loss. Like my other decks it lacks the 4 copies of the best cards, but it seems to work fairly well as it is. Feather is ridiculous if you have some cheap instants to throw around, especially on the 10th District Legionnaires.

Re: Mtg arena open beta
omedetou! Gold is where all the cool kids hang out
And yeah, Feather is a monster. If you get any Dreadhorde Arcanists it gets really horrible. Someone did this to me once: T2: arcanist, T3 feather, T4 and thereafter: target arcanist with pump spell, attack, pull pump spell back from 'yard, target arcanist (or feather) again with the same spell, return to hand, cast again, blah blah I died.
It's a nasty synergy.
Also, interesting news on changes coming soon. People seem a bit peeved that we're not getting Kaladesh/Amonkhet any time soon, but honestly I think the fact that Wizards are being up front about it is good. Not sure how I feel about the changes to the quest tree. If I read it right, does that mean we lose our weekly quests but get Set quests instead? And all that about spending gems to get more quests. Smells a bit of a cash grab. I'll reserve judgement, but as I understand it we may be about to see a large hit in the amount of free stuff we can pick up.
*edit* ah, I misread. The Mastery Tree will replace weekly rewards, not dailies. Still, that's 3 packs a week I wont see again Mastery tree better deliver the same (or better?) or WotC best get ready for me to sit in my room and harrumph at them.

Re: Mtg arena open beta
There is a YouTube video that explains the mastery system. (about 50 seconds in).
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EOo52kO649k
Daily quests are still a thing, but instead of 3 packs a week, you get 1 pack every 2 levels. So, instead of having to win 15 games per week to get 3 packs and nothing till next week, you can win 20 games this week and 10 games the next and still get the same rewards. (I think, they haven't said they are limiting it by games per week). I guess the first few packs will be easy to get and as you advance the gaps between levels will take longer to fill.
The pay gems for more stuff option is, first of all, optional, but it does seem to unlock a lot more content. You get gold, gems, ICR's and extra packs from what I could see from pausing the video.
Whether or not it is worth it probably depends on how much you think you will play over the course of season and how much progress you are likely to make.
I think you'll probably be able to get more free stuff if you put the time in.
