selling on ebay

Post by me_in_japan » Wed Feb 04, 2015 12:46 pm

I have a question that I hope one (or more) of y'all can help me with.

I'm intending to sell a mini on ebay, and hooooope (perhaps a little optimistically) to raise enough to buy sufficient harlequins to have me painting motley for the next decade or so. I've never sold on ebay before. Does anybody have any advice regarding things like:

length of sale period - a week? 10 days? a month?
starting price - I don't think 1y is a good idea. I'm thinking 150 USD or so.
setting a reserve price - how does this differ from setting a starting price?
shipping internationally from Japan - what's a reasonable price to set? 1000yen? Also, what's the best signed-for method?
Which ebay store front should I use? My Paypal is UK based, but I believe they charge you for international money changing. What has your experience been of this?

So, lotsa questions. The mini in question, btw, is Ar-Fienel by Studio McVey. They're limited edition (sold out years ago) and rare as hen's teeth. Last one I saw on ebay was a month or so ago and sold for over 300 USD. Cost me 12.50 to buy originally, so I'm fairly confident I can make a profit on this. :D The question is, how much of one...

1. I usually go for 1 week.

2. Whatever you think is fair mate. Not 1 yen at all. Ever.

3. If the reserve price is not met, the item will not be sold.

4. I use EMS. I sent 4 metal chaos BloodBowl chaps to Newcastke for 1500 yen. It is only insured up to 10,000 yen I believe.

5. I tried to sell via ebay JP, but couldn't so I just go for the UK one.

Be aware thought that once it arrives in the UK, the tax man will mercilessly gouge the recipient. I sold about £55 worth of Rogue Trader stuff, marked it as a gift, and the buyer had to pay a £30 customs charge. That's happened twice to UK buyers. American buyers have never had that problem though in my experience.

Yeah it's worth noting on the listing that the buyer is responsible for any tax/import charges.

I've sold alot of stuff in the past, but not since I've been here, so only used Paypal through Oz.
