Buy Mantic, Perrys, Foundry, Wargames Factory, Warlord etc?
Cheaper by a mile!

There is also Kings of War. They've got decent looking Fantasy models.

The trick is to play GW games with non-GW models. At the moment, that's a pretty doable proposition. All of my haemi stuff for 40k is non-GW. I reckon its even easier for fantasy - there are plenty of passable elf/dwarf/medieval type minis going around. Mantic and Avatars of War spring to mind. Those guys that do the vampire knights are pretty good, too. I forget the name, but you know who I mean. All swooshy and tatter'd banners a-blowin' in the wind kinda thing.

Wow. And then Corona happened. Just....crickets, all the way through to 2023...

Yeah, even if there's no price advantage it can be fun to mix in non-GW stuff, although I really blew it with some Privateer models I bought to use as Tree Kin alternatives, only to discover they were to small and weird-looking in real life to use. Some of the places that have genuinely nice Wood Elfy stuff like CoolMiniOrNot only do limited edition runs that cost far more than GW.

I'm thinking of starting a secondary army — Tomb Kings — for some painting and theme variety. Quite a few of the models don't even exist yet, so they have to be bought elsewhere or kit-bashed, but there is really nothing suitable out there with a fantasy Egyptian theme. Some outfit called Crocodile has a line up with a few things that might be usable, but most of it's too silly-looking.

Wood Elves and Tomb Kings eh? Thats a strange and unlikely combination of armies to collect.....
Next thing you know, Kojibear will be buying a new army. 8-)

just means that my hobby priority will go towards FoW, Warmachine, and Battletech while I paint up what I have in GW and then small purchases after that with the above taking priority again.

Funnily enough, my preference is leaning more and more to the opposite these days. :) There's nothing Mantic or Foundry make that I prefer to Warhammer miniatures, but I'm not that bothered by the Warhammer rules themselves. Ditto for 40K.

I suppose the fact that I already have loads of Warhammer and 40K minis makes a difference. If I were building up a "sci fi human" army from scratch, I think it'd be filled with stuff from Antenociti's Workshop, Pig Iron, Heresy, Hasslefree and Old Crow.
