Right, thanks for the recommendations. I'll look into David Gemmel's works and the wheel of time series. If you happen to have anything else in mind, that you consider to be a good old high fantasy yarn, then please comment.

P.S Onto book 2 of A song of Ice and Fire, whoo! ... prologue's is a bit boring though. The show premieres on April 17, so not long now.

I just watched the first episode.
Not quite up to my unfairly high expectations, but still a fine effort.

The good
Even the royalty were dirty.
Arya made me laugh.
Winterfell was even darker than I imagined.

The bad
The Lannisters didn't come off as being devious enough.
The festival and wedding scenes seemed lacking in extras.

Overall
Liked it overall.

What'd you all think of it?

..nor mine unfortunately. To me, it felt too rushed and the script, while faithful to the lines in the book were truncated for screen time allowance, making it lose some of the charm.

I thought the opening was especially lack lustre, what with the acting there being a bit weak.

However,Its nice to see a face to the characters that you've read about and the sets and props were fantastic.
Sharpe makes a right and good Stark, and all the other characters fit to a T. I'm looking forward to episode 2.

Oddly, I find myself itching to rewatch it tonight.

I read slowwwly, and it would likely take me 3 months to get through one volume of the series, so I'm a little reluctant to read beyond book one, at least until the series is finished.
Me? I like the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. The setting (the Napoleonic Wars... with dragons!) might not be everyone's cup of Ceylon, but much like GRRM's series it is grounded in a sense of the real despite its fantasy trappings. What's more, each volume clocks in at 350-400 pages, so getting through them doesn't take the time those BFFs do.

hmmn interesting. While I do love me my huge long epic fantasy novels, napoleonics + dragons floats my boat (or sinks it, which is what i suspect you get when you combine naval combat and dragons...)
