I dunno, - I kinda feel we have a responsibility as adults to show kids what is and isnt rude. I mean, if one just leaves it and doesnt react, the kid is never going to learn what is and isnt ok. I'm not suggesting one should get angry - that's never a good idea when dealing with kids, or the public in general, but I do think it's quite important for people to be told that their actions are not acceptable. You can't just hope they'll work it out themselves, because there's no incentive for them to do so. I dunno, maybe it's just the teacher in me talking, but I think kids need to be told/shown what's right and wrong, or they just end up as chavs.

^ This. And it is also true at the opposite end if the spectrum. If a kid is staring at me but smiles and tries to speak English and say hello, I always take the time to be friendly and speak to them.

No I'm not against chav's. Or Tory's for that matter. People are free to aspire to whatever labels they like I reckon. I was kind of joking yes but I have nothing against chav's. Non violent ones that is. It's the bad few that give the whole lot a bad name. Jimmy Saville Chav or non chav? He had the gear way ahead of his time. ;)

I don't know. It is one thing to teach to our own children, or to the children we are given charges over, but it is another thing to presume we have the responsibility to teach anything to any other kid. What if there parent is near by and disagrees with what you say?
The only time I have ever told someone elses kids what to do in public (apart from everyday at work) was in Sainsbury's when a group of 6 or 7 year old were swearing and blindin at the top their voices in the confectionery aisle. One kid even called his mate a C. The whole store could hear it.
I just shouted out of shock more than anything and then calmly said "Um kids, language."
They looked really embarrassed as if they knew it was out of line and said sorry immediately.
I then made a run for it before their hard as nails parents turned up.

Yeah that is a different atmosphere and a much more positive one to the staring it's true. You said before though Spev about Japanese peoples complete lack of spacial awareness. It's very true.
My favourite one is when you are behind someone about to enter a shop or a room and they close the door directly behind them slap bang in front of your face as if you weren't even there.
Oh is that just me? OK forget it. :)

I've asked people about that before. Holding the door open for someone is a western thing by all accounts. A lot of my students who had visited the UK/US found it suprising.

About the social awareness thing, I spoke to my dad and my brother about it. My dad said the same thing about Turks, and my bruv said the same about Thais.
