Comics, Comics, Comics - What do you recommend?

Post by Mike the Pike » Sun Jun 05, 2011 1:34 pm

So, folks, what comics do y'all love?
I wanna know your favourite authors, artists, characters series.

I'll kick things off...

I love a lot of Garth Ennis stuff. 'Preacher' was amazing of course. 'The Boys' is fantastic too. His modern take on war comics are all pretty cool too. 'The Pro' and 'Dicks' are hilarious. Not many 'action' comics have you laughing out loud. My favourites though are the 'Wormwood' series. Not since Terry Pratchett's 'Good Omens' has the arrival of the Anti-Christ and the Apocalypse been so funny.

The collected editions of 'Charley's War'. Very thought provoking stuff.

'Slaine'. Great humour. Great setting(s). Great story telling. Fascinating background. "Kiss my axe!"

Psi-Judge Anderson. I have a thing for strong yet vulnerable heroines. So sue me.

A lot of Alan Moore stuff. Heavy going at times but fantastic story telling. Pity Hollywood screwed them up so much.

GTO - The Japanese manga. Hilarious stuff. Should be required reading for all ALTs :D

Vagabond - Fantastic art and story telling. Starting to suffer from hypercharacteritis but still great stuff.

That'll do for a start. What about you scurvy lot?

Judge Dredd - Anything is good.
ABC Warriors - 2000AD story about a bunch of Robot Mercs
Preacher - Just very, very funny stuff
Secret Wars - Load of Marvel heroes get whisked off to another planet to duke it out.
Maus - Retelling of a concentration camp survivors story by his son. Mice are Jews, Cats are Germans.
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - All the best known Victorian era characters form a "Super Group"
No More Coffee Man - Funny stories about a superhero who drinks too much coffee.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - The original stuff before the comics/movies/toys.

Those are just off the top of my head and are ones that I always come back to.

The Authority
Dreamwave's run of Transformers
Another vote for Preacher
Hitman by Garth Ennis
Hellblazer (depending on the writer. Brian Azzarello's run is aces)
Just a Pilgrim by Garth Ennis
Mutant X (marvel alternate universe series) and it's prequel X-Force
Generation-X and X-Force (Warren Ellis's run, titled Counter X)
Fables, seriously I cannot recommend this enough. Read it, its golden.
The Punisher, starting with the Welcome Back Frank story arc, written by Garth Ennis.
Barracuda, a spin off from The Punisher.
Planetary by Warren Ellis
Gen 13

And my all time personal favourite, the regeneratin' degenerate, the merc with the mouth, the crimson comedian.....

DEADPOOL

Ryan Reynolds was AWESOME as Deadpool in the Wolverine movie. He only had a couple of lines but they were the best parts of the movie. Its a shame that he wasnt available to film the ending of the movie so they got some stunt double and stictched his freaking mouth closed. WTF. Thats like having Judge Dredd take his helmet off!!!

I'll add my shout to the Preacher fanboy club. I actually own all the individual issues from issue 13 onwards (so sue me, I was a slow starter) as well as every single one shot they did.

Sandman. Pretentious, but epic, epic storytelling. These are the only comics I actually brought to Japan with me. (TPs only, unfortunately. Two of em are signed hardbacks, mind you :D ) I'd recommend this complete run to anybody who appreciates a well thought out story arc. The last couple of books are jaw droppingly well done.

The Rifle Brigade by Garth Ennis. dumb, dumb fun.

100 Bullets. I came to Japan before this finished. I must dig up my old issues next time Im back in Scotland, as my wee bro says he finished the run in my absence.

Hellblazer was also very good, although thats my schoolboy's memory speaking. I havent read them since then.

re Fables - I tried it. Didnt care for it at all.

I also liked The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. What those film producers did to this book makes Judge Dredd look like it was shot frame for frame from the comic.

I liked The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen, too, although ive only read each of them once, the former a long time ago, the latter quite recently.

I completely forgot so many good titles...

I second 'Maus' by Art Spiegalman(sp). If you like that kind of thing the Joe Sacco's graphic novels about the war in the former Yugoslavia and Palestine are also interesting.

I love 'Fables' too. How could I forget 'the Rifle Brigade' Fantastic parody of war comics and movies.

"League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" was great too. Although Hollywood cleaned it up and added in a extra characters for general public, I don't think it sucked as hard as JD.

Of course Preacher and GTO are favourites of mine too.
I also like Tintin and Asterix and Obelix as classics.
I've just read a good two part series called Green Manor which is all about a club in Victorian London that specializes in murder. Very Sherlock Holmes in style.
The Sherlock Holmes graphic novels by Ian Culbard are very nice and he's just done At the Mountains of Madness for Lovecraft too.
I've been reading The Rainbow Orchid which is new but produced in the Herge Tintin style of old school rainy Sunday afternoon adventure reading.

Superheroes, I really like the way Batman has turned out over the years. In fact the video game Arkham Asylum is more fun than most of the movies and very true to the comics. I always preferred Spiderman though and was really pleased Sam Raimi did the movies for that putting Bruce Campbell in as the cameo ringmaster. Also the original Uncanny X men is really good in The Phoenix Saga. I hate the x men movies as the old comics are so much better.

Manga: Black Jack and Buddha.

Those of you needing inspiration for Cutlass should read Long John Silver. I have them but I haven't read them yet.

The best comic of all time? Got to be The Beano.

(Sorry Whizzer and Chips fans.)

I like Sandman, Maus, some Grant Morrison stuff (7 Soldiers, Animal Man, Batman), Batman comics and some other stuff by Frank Miller, X-men by Chris Claremont, most stuff by Brian K. Vaughan (Ex Machina, Pride of Baghdad, Y the Last Man), the first series of Elfquest, Phoenix by Osamu Tezuka, and early Knights of the Dinner Table.

Hmm, I guess I like mostly pretentious comics, or maybe they're more girly, I don't know.

Also Groo the Wanderer and Carl Bark's Uncle Scrooge.
