"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."
In Australia and New Zealand, April 25th is the day we take a moment to remember the fallen, form the disaster in Gallipoli to the recent casualties in Afghanistan. Lest we forget.

Re: On Anzac Day...
To those with Turkish ancestry, we are sorry. It was all Winston Churchill's fault!

Not ALL of it, surely?Mike the Pike wrote:To those with Turkish ancestry, we are sorry. It was all Winston Churchill's fault!
Pretty sure the dastardly huns and their allies were involved somewhere along the line.
I'd say the Mr. Churchill was only 95% responsible at best.

As this forum's ambassador for The People's Republic of Kebabistan, The Spevna wholeheartedly accepts the apology and joins you in blaming Churchill.
But on a serious not, we should all spare a thought for those that have given their lives in service.
Lest we forget.

At least the sacrifices made were not entirely in vain. Australia and New Zealand took another giant stride to proper independence as a result and Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, rose to prominence.

True enough mate. Turkey would be a very different place were it not for the events of WWI and the actions of The Spevna's namesake.Mike the Pike wrote:At least the sacrifices made were not entirely in vain.
