Dunkirk

Post by Primarch » Sun Aug 20, 2017 10:04 am

Is anyone interested in going to see Dunkirk? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5013056/vid ... _=tt_ov_vi
The movie comes out on the 9th of September, but I don't mind waiting a week or two. Midland Square or perhaps 109 Cinemas in Nagoya should be good for most people I guess.

I'd be interested. Later would be better for me, to give work a chance to cool down after the semester starts.

During lunch I thought I'd google my name and Dunkirk, and found out that there was a military base that housed many of the soldiers after they got back from France that shared my family name. :) The camp was later turned into a P.O.W camp :?

Dunkirk. We were there.

Spoiler free.

Good film. I give it 2 stars, Dad gave it 4. I thought Atonement did a better job at portraying the beach scenes. They just didn't have enough extras in this film to portray the panic and sheer numbers of the debacle. Way too much time focused on the air scenes made it feel very low budget. Overall a good effort and a killer Vangelis style soundtrack by Hans Zimmer that led and carried the whole piece. The first 20 minutes of the film are excellent. The pacing, the look, the atmosphere gives it that Saving Private Ryan kick off a good war film needs.
And then Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins) turns up, an actor who I hate. This ruined it a bit for me. The rest of the acting was spot on including Branagh with the Royal Shakespeare sea admiral character. Would I watch again? Probably not. If you like Spitfires though, this film is epic. For a better war film see Hamburger Ridge or American Sniper.
Very patriotic in places and very real but ultimately not A Bridge Too Far. :) I enjoyed the time with Dad as we sat under the speaker and he was leaping out of his seat literally and yelling "SHIT" "POOR BUGGERS"> LOL
Forget about yesterday, don't worry about tomorrow because all that matters is today.

Well, assuming people still want to go and see this, which evenings are people usually free?
A Friday or Saturday works best for me.

I'd like to see it, but i don't have a regular schedule. If my schedule lines up with the date you agree upon, I'd like to join if it wouldn't be too much.

How do folks feel about Sat 30th for trying to see the movie? The schedule for Midland Square isn't available yet, but hopefully it will still be screening.
