NagoyaHammer, Discord and the Future

Edit - Screw it, NagoyaHammer is staying up.

Since I posted the original message about this site, I have received 3 private messages, through NH's system rather than Discord. Received another set of messages asking me to turn over the domain name because Discord needs an internet presence beyond the app it requires, again the messages weren't sent through Discord. I've already experienced one discussion topic being pushed out of the way by Discord's stream of consciousness style of posting, (and it happens fairly often on other servers I use), and while there has been a little more activity over on the server, it is the same gang of miscreants who were posting here until the shift. It's not like there are suddenly a bunch of users crawling out of the woodwork.

So NH will be staying, even if it turns out that it is just me talking to myself. I will set up a post for people to post the Discord links to, so that you have an anchor page people can find online and get the invite from. I think it is a fine service for general chatter, but if I am honest, I prefer discussions that don't necessarily have the object permanence of a newborn.

Long live NagoyaHammer!

You step outside for two minutes and look what happens...

I've been on a hobby hiatus for a while as I dealt with some personal issues, and while I have been checking the site regularly, I haven't had the energy or motivation to post anything. My self inflicted exile seems to be drawing to a close, so I guess it is time to do a little housekeeping.

With the recent move of the group over to Discord, I'm thinking to close up NagoyaHammer. For the past 15 years this site has been my default homepage on my phone and PC browsers, but I guess all good things must come to an end. A friend of mine back in the UK has been maintaining the site, hosting it and keeping everything running behind the scenes. I'll be letting him know shortly that the site will be shuttering and that his task is at an end.

Regards,
Prim.

Prim! Good to hear from you old man.
I will be sad to see the forum go. Discord might be more convenient and useful, but it is visually noisy and annoying. These old forums are simple and clean and let you concentrate. But yeah, as there are like a dozen of us who regularly use it, perhaps the time has come.
Relate note, I'm a JHS ALT. There is a lesson in the 2nd year book about writing an email in English. The Japanese teacher is introducing the topic and one of the kids, like 13 years old. "E-メルはなんですか?” This is a new textbook edition even. Technology changes that fast these days.

Thanks, Stu - hope you're doing all right! Hopefully you'll hop over there and join us in... well, doing pretty much what we do here just with different threading.

Blimey. I've been over on the discord a bit (if I'm honest, I've been commenting there more than I have on this site in recent times) but I'll miss the simplicity and ease of lookup on this site. There's a lot of good information and personal memories for me here. Most of my hobby time in Japan is documented on this site, one way or another, so I'll be sad to see it shuttered.

That said, I've been here long enough to remember the Inter Prefectural Dungeon Bowl Izakaya League, so I know that these things aren't an end so much as a rebranding of things. I look forward to seeing y'all over on the discord and to my doing a better job of contributing to the stream of hobby stuff more often.

Stuart - huge, huge thanks for being the guy in charge of this place for so many years - it doesn't go unnoticed or unappreciated. Please pass on my gratitude to your friend in the UK, too, for his work behind the scenes.

The kid probably didn't know there was an alternative to the fax machine
Hope things are going relatively well for you Prim considering the circumstances. Like it's been said, big thanks for running the site until now! Personally I welcome the switch to Discord. It feels less cluttered to me, and it's much easier to share images and videos once you get the hang of it.
I think the biggest hurdle will be discoverability, which to be fair, this site didn't have much of either, but at least it had a long history which helped. Anyways, it's not the end! Here's to everyone and more migrating over to Discord!

Just like to chime in to thank Prim for supporting this site for so long, among all the other organisational tasks he's taken on for the community. Putting in that kind of work, big or small, for what's supposed to be your leisure activity is a big ask and hobby communities rely on the rare people who step up and do it.

I don't personally see Discord as a 1-1 replacement for forums (and I use both heavily still, as well as Slack all day every day) so I'll be sad to see the place go as much as I appreciate Discord's advantages. But as long as new folks actually find the Discord as they come along all should be well.

Also with that in mind, here's one more link to the discord: https://discord.gg/HhBvmyEq

But if anyone wants to invite anyone, members can make invite links. By my reckoning, we're still missing jus (who I've talked to IRL about it), kojibear, and Badruck-if-he's-still-around.

Badruck hasn't logged in to NH since 2019...

Oh excellent, glad NH is sticking around!
