The 3rd Annual Japan Open of WarmaHordes!

Post by Danguinius » Tue Jun 23, 2015 1:10 am

Greetings,

I just wanted to announce that this year's Japan Open of WarmaHordes will once again be held in Fukuyama. Last year we had 16 of Japan's finest players duke it out over 4 rounds of play. This year there will be some slight changes (42 points, 3 lists, deathclock, also an award for "best objective")...here are the details:

Event: The Japan Open - War Machine & Hordes Championship Tournament
Date: Sunday, October 11th, 2015
Time: 9:00 doors open, 9:15 registration begins; 10:00 tournament starts
Place: Fukuyama Civic Center (located just behind Fukuyama Castle, a 5-minute walk from Fukuyama station).
Players: 16+ players can participate this year – expanded from last year
Cost: 1500 yen per player. 1500 yen is for the tournament on Sunday, October 11th. There will also be free play on Monday, October 13th for 500 yen...yes, that is a national holiday. We will probably also have a "nomikai" on the evening of Sunday, October 11th, but I haven`t heard anything about the place, time, or cost of this yet.

Materials: The tournament organizer will provide mats, terrain, and zone markers. Players are responsible for their own materials as written in the 2015 Steamroller rules.
Rules: This will be a 4-round tournament played under the 2015 Steamroller rules. The tournament will follow the “Divide & Conquer” format (so, each list must be used at least once). Players must bring three 42-point lists from the same WarMachine or Hordes faction following the rules for character restrictions. These lists must be written/printed out and made available for the tournament organizer and each opponent. This tournament also has a special provision: all models used in all of your lists must be fully painted (as per painting requirements listed in the Hardcore rule set) and based, with the front arc of each model painted or otherwise marked.

Prizes: Trophies will be given to the top 3 finishers (to be determined according the 2015 Steamroller criteria). In addition, there may be a “booby prize” for one particularly unlucky player. Further, an additional prize for best painted army will be awarded to the player with the best painted army that does not finish in the top 3 (this is different than last year). Lastly, we are adding one more competition for this year: “Best Objective”. Though we will provide objectives for all participants, players are encouraged to design/create/paint their own army’s objective. A prize will be awarded to the player who brings the best/most creative/coolest one.

Contact: To register, or ask any questions, please contact:
Eric Perez - tournament organizer (vigilantecowboy@hotmail.com)
Daniel McCartney (rodserling@hotmail.com)
Keiichirou Yamada (eaac6185@mb.infoweb.ne.jp)
“Tetsu” Michiura (yfe56169@nifty.com)

Each round is 102 minutes, 51 minutes and 51 minutes on each side of the deathclock. Model set-up is also done on this time. Each turn must be a minimum 15 seconds long.

First Round
10:00~11:40

Lunch
11:40~13:00

Second Round
13:00~14:50

Third Round

Fourth Round

Hi Dan,

Good to hear it is on again this year. I would love to see it held in Osaka though :-).

Well, as I'm sure Primarch would be the first to agree; it takes a lot to run a tournament. Here in the Fukuyama/Hiroshima area we have 14-15 (4 X 4) mats, multiple tubs of steampunk appropriate terrain, zones, flags and objectives for 20+ players, and a cheap community center that allows players to participate for just 1500 yen (including the cost of the trophies, room and everything). Soon, we will also have 10 chess clocks (check the price on those on eBay!). We also have a wonderful Press Ganger in Gannon. Thus, outside of Tokyo, Fukuyama/Hiroshima is the best place for larger-scale WMH tournaments.

I am not sure if we will always hold the Japan Open in this area and I can't speak for Gannon, but as of now, there is no one in Osaka with enough of the actual materials (mats, terrain, zones, chess clocks, etc.) or experience to run a tourney of this scale. Not to mention, as of now there are only two Press Gangers in Japan (Gannon and another person up in the Kanto area). And, I`m sure getting a hall in Osaka would also raise the entry fee to 4,000 or 5,000 yen per day. If this situation were to change, we'd be happy to discuss holding it somewhere else. But it would take a community of gamers making a significant time and financial investment to be able to offer what we offer here.

I doubt I'll be able to come this year because I am going back to Canada for the Obon holiday, but I would like to come! It's been lots of fun the last couple of years.

Underdweller, Have fun back in cool and refreshing Canada (and forget all about the brutal and unforgiving August weather in Japan). We hope you can find a way to make it down her in October; the tourney wouldn't be the same without you!

We are just a few weeks out and over 20 people are signed up for this year's tourney. But, it's still not too late join in. If you are interested in joining the tourney, please PM me or Gannon and we will get you set up.
