job wrote:I hate to say it but isn't the IP for 40k and Warhammer at this point way out of the league of Mr Priestly and any other gaming company? Think of the value of the 40k brand to even sell video games. If GW were to some how flop, I think the IP would end up in a corporation that cough up more than any mere war miniature company could muster.

And in the hands of a company like Hasbro or EA, I'd hate to think what they'd do to the 40k universe we know. It'd probably make Kirby look like a martyr. :(
Probably. Priestley has even said that he is done with Warhammer, so I doubt if he would even want to make the effort.
Besides, a drop in profits (whilst bad), doesn't mean GW will be closing it's doors next week. They still made 7 million pounds profit in the last 6 months. Now, I can't speak for everyone, but if I had 7 million pounds put into my bank account every 6 months, I wouldn't be filing for bankruptcy.

Warhammer fantasy is going or so the hype says. I might go back to 7th edition so I can enjoy the wood elves. Whether they fold or not or go even more corporate this is a good chance for addicts and fans to reassess on what and how they play GW I reckon. Albeit which edition/codex, home brew rules like kill zone and so on. I'm thinking Daves Eldar. As ToD says we have the rule books and models already so that's lucky. Buying further GW stuff will just overload the mountain of stuff to paint. Having said that I feel its a shame GW stopped supporting the hobby and put many gamers off such a rich and developed world setting.
I'm currently playing Warhammer roleplay 1st edition via hangouts. This is my third time of playing enemy within campaign. This time as a player. The Old World from those early days never gets old funnily enough. :)
This is something that can be arranged on the new thread Rich has made. What system and edition do you like and want to play? Personally I'm done with keeping up with the Joneses on new rules. Any edition would be fun. 7th for Warhammer and 5th for 40k are my choice.
Back to the point though GW made a load of redundancies 10 years ago when they had to renew their license on the Lotr ip. My mate Mike got sacked from their Brighton store and was given that exact reason. He got a job in a pub instead, probably a better job for him in the long run. That GW store was thick with glue and spray Matt smell I often saw the staff recovering outside from the fumes. :)

Nothing stopping you from using Wood Elves in the current edition. Ten and Koji regularly win games with them.

Anyway, 9th ed is due this summer. I really can't see GW stopping half their production run when they are losing money.

I can see Hail Caesar, or a variant, homebrewed or official, as a means of playing Fantasy in the future. So I'm not too worried. Rick Priestley is on record on the warlord forums as saying that there's nothing to stop them from doing a fantasy take on HC down the line. It may not happen tomorrow, but I have a feeling in my water that they'll do it. When that happens, and we will also get GoA, there may not be a reason to use those ever-changing GW rulesets again. Just my feeling as to where things are going of course, but I feel more choice,a nd good times lie ahead GW or not.

@ Prim Wow 9th edition is coming in Summer. Time flies, doesn't seem 5 minutes since 8th edition. What is it 3 years?
Is the Warhammer campaign still going? Is it ongoing or will you start a new one? I only ask because with 3 Warhammer armies at my disposal and more free time out of the house these days I'd be keen to give it another bash. Especially interested in what GW will pull out of the hat for a summer release. Interesting.
Still Lovejoy has a good point. Would be awesome to see a fantasy set of rules from Warlord. We could use Hail Caesar as you suggested before.

@ Lovejoy
Crickhollow isn't until March 9th and next month is February so it wouldn't be two weeks in a row for gaming. They are a month apart. Feel free to run something if you can make it but I understand if you're busy.
