The age difference is a bit of a cause for concern but not a bad choice as far as ability and look are concerned.

Doesnt seem like a bad choice. Better than Tom Cruise or some such ruining the film.

Wasn't Bilbo supposed to be solidly middle-aged at the time of The Hobbit to boot? I could easily see a mid-60's actor pulling it off. Plus McCoy has that hobbity aura, doesn't he? And enough of a resemblance to Holm that there's quasi-continuity between the films.

(Tom Cruise is totally going to be Beorn, though. I mean, come on.)

I don't actually remember how old he was at the time of the Hobbit but, as has already been said, nothing a kilo of foundation and WETA can't fix.

How about Brad Pitt as a slightly younger Gandalf to star along monsieur Cruise?
