Travel Insurance

Post by The Underdweller » Tue Jul 28, 2015 12:57 am

Does anyone know how I can get travel insurance to cover me when I am back in Canada or in the States? I had to cancel my Canadian national health insurance to avoid paying taxes in two countries, so I am not covered back home right now.

I have Shakai Hoken, but I am pretty sure that does not work overseas. Anytime I Google travel insurance Japan I of course get advice for people coming to Japan, not the other way round. The last few times I have just hoped I didn't get sick, but it would be nice to know I could go to a hospital without going into debt.

I've always taken out insurance through the travel agency I bought my tickets from. I guess you could try going to HIS or JTB and asking there.

You can also buy it at the Airport, either from the desk or an automatic machine. The machines are Japanese only, I think.

I usually use World Nomads. Never had any trouble with them, and the one time I actually had to use the policy it was easy as pie.

Thanks for the suggestions!

After reading this I started thinking about travel agencies, and then I remembered that ECC has one (mostly for people who want to study English abroad), so I asked them and they said they can sell me travel insurance.
