The Eternal Dilemma

Post by The Other Dave » Tue Aug 10, 2010 2:46 pm

So my hobby budget for this month is about 10,000 yen.

I want about 15USD worth of stuff from Litko - some 40mm round bases for the Epic IG Stormblades I haven't based up yet, maybe some more blast markers because you really can never have too many. And this is pretty high priority, since (me being anal-retentive and all) I can't field non-based vehicles together with based ones, so the Stormblades won't see play till I base them. But I don't want anything else from Litko, which means shipping will be a significant chunk of whatever I spend.

But I also want about 50GBP worth of Epic Fliers from Forgeworld - some Phoenix bombers for my Eldar (which, annoyingly, are sold by the pair but fielded only in threes), and some Fighta-Bommas for the Orks, so all my armies have some air support. But that leaves a good chunk of my budget, and I've thought for a while that it seems like I ought to get some nice terrain to replace my increasingly-ratty cardboard buildings - and FW does have some nice "airfield" themed terrain in 6mm for Aeronautica Imperialis. The fliers also feel high-priority, since FW has not been recasting Epic-scale models when they run out - so it's likely my last chance to get the (much-nicer-than-the-ones-from-GW) FW Epic fliers.

But on the other hand, the place to go for 6mm terrain is Old Crow, which has a very big range of very nice terrain in 6mm. And getting a small selection of terrain from Forgeworld (as something extra with the flyer order) is hardly worth the trouble, since at 6mm if you're going to get terrain, you should either get a bunch or not bother.

And, of course, the kicker is that shipping to Japan means I can't really just do all 3 - it'll be much more cost-effective to get everything I want from one place. But no one place has everything I want. Why can't three companies I like, operating from two different continents, combine shipping to suit my needs?

Well, you have 3 choices,
Either increase your budget this month and buy nothing next month.
Save your money this month and buy everything next month.
Since the FW stuff is more likely to be limited, buy that first, then get the other stuff next month.

The bases for the tanks can wait unless you are dead set on playing that IG regiment this month. Likewise, your terrain is ok for now so there is no real rush to replace it immeadiately.

What're you doing, giving level-headed, reasonable advice... :D

Yeah, I'll likely go with the FW order, plus break down and get some of their airfield terrain 'cause it's sexy.

How has FW been with shipping times lately? Last time I made an order (two or three years ago) I didn't get my stuff for 3 or 4 months.

No idea, I havent used them in ages.

I can give level-headed reasonable advice. I never listen to it though.

My own choice would have been: Buy everything.

Anyhow, ToD, your problem isnt too bad.
For me it's usually a question of models or food for the month.

I'm soooo hungry. :D

I was gonna say, I don't think that's a hard choice for you. Models or food? Who needs food!

My order from Old Crow arrived the other day. They do make great stuff, very well cast and no warped resin in sight! Shipping is 10% which isn't too shabby in my opinion. BUT, and its is a big but, be prepared to wait. I placed my order and got an email then next day saying I should expect to wait 3 weeks. Not a problem I thought, and I was very happy to get such a prompt response. The 21 days elapses and my order is not yet here. I mail the guy to ask if he can check it out. He replies and apologises saying that he got behind on orders and he sent it last week :( . Not great but, at least it's been sent. The order arrived pretty soon after that mail, and like I said, everything was great. One vote for Old Crow from me but don't expect anything too speedy.
