NH24 - 40K (Friday May 3rd) Planning Thread

Post by Primarch » Sun Nov 05, 2023 10:53 pm

With the dates now set, it's time to start planning the games for NagoyaHammer2024. This won't be a poll, but if anyone wants to contribute ideas, state preferences or offer any recommendations, this will be the place to do it.

To begin with I'll go over how I have handled things before, as that will be my basis for planning things this time around unless any better ideas get posted.

Generally speaking, NagoyaHammer's 40K events have not been "tournaments", I've usually tried to keep things relatively relaxed and friendly. My main aim in running these things has been to get people playing against new opponents and meeting new people. That said, players who won their games will usually be paired off with other winners, and those who lost with other people in the same boat. Player's wins/losses and points differences are recorded, so there will be some competitive nature to the games, at least among the people that want that style. For folks bringing a list full of chaff, you'll hopefully be paired up with like-minded players.
In the spirit of mixing with new players, tag-teams have been quite popular. Either players find their own partners or they are thrown together randomly on the day. This method helps balance out player numbers if we have an odd number as I ask players with larger forces to bring enough to play solo, just in case.
The final thing I try and do is vary the points levels of the games. Despite best intentions, people arrive late, or spend too long chatting and not enough time getting their armies ready. So usually I aim for a 1000 point game in the morning, 1500 in the afternoon and 2000 in the evening. (We have the room from 9am till 9:30pm).

So, any thoughts?

That all sounds good, and I don't think anything about the fundamental dynamics of the game has changed that would alter that plan.

I assume that means with tag teams each player starts with a 500 point force in the morning, a 750 point force in the middle game, and a 1000 point force for the evening?

That would be the case for anyone in a team. Players may opt to play by themselves (or may be asked to if there is an odd number of players/teams), in which case they will need the full points value for their force.

Sounds good. Though depending on how many people show up it might be better to have as many players as possible in tag teams to help the number of players/terrain ratio.

As the terrain discussion was getting a bit long, I have moved it to its own thread.

How about having a painting event, perhaps during the lunch and evening breaks, where people put out their unit/army and then the visitors vote on the top units/armies.

That is certainly a possibility and something that we have done before. I'll have a think about it.
