Hive War is an up to date version of the rules that gives you a perfectly functioning skirmish game, and basically index versions of the six main gangs. It doesn't have campaign rules, and doesn't have the full skill tables (instead it just has a selection of skills for each gang). This should be fine for one off games but would essentially limit you to the contents of a standard gang box.
Is the Hive War set the only way to get that, or is the "Necromunda Rulebook" the same contents?

At any rate, I think I'm going to get a box of cops and maybe a couple ogryns to back them up, just for giggles.

Necromunda Rulebook has the skill lists and I expect has ruled for the standard campaign type.

I don't think it'll have Enforcer rules.

Right, it seems like I'd need the Book of Judgment. Eh, it's Specialist, so they have e-book versions.

OK, I am calmer now

I don't see why a loose campaign-type system wouldn't work. Something like we are doing with Crusade. There seems to be enough interest.

Even if the current rules are a mess we could start and adjust as needed. There doesn't seem to be any weak and unplayable gangs.

I was going to ask about that, actually: what is the balance like between gangs? I don't really keep up with Necromunda and most info I can find is from several years ago.

It's not really a big deal since I don't think anyone here is really that competetive, but I always have this amazing ability to choose factions that turn out to be really horrible competetively.

I used to be a big Necromunda freak, I am not 100% up to date either but everything I have read suggests it is still a rock, paper, napalm type game where the gangs are different but not overpowering. No one gang can do everything. Some are good melee, others have stealth, others have high tech weapons, others good for the long campaigns.

I always think it is more about the flavour you want to play rather than this is the gang that wins 75% of the time.

Based on the above, Corpse Grinders are the only really problematic *gang* (though Goliath and Cawdor seem like they have some top tier options). Other than that spamming certain wargear can be a problem?

Interesting article. I was considering starting a Cawdor gang but everything I read said they were bottom rank. Maybe I just wanted to play with fire templates.

My (limited) understanding is that it's all the fire that makes Cawdor fun and good. In a game where ranges are often short and hitting can be difficult, lots of flame is very good, and lots of warm bodies in your roster is also generally a strong choice. Blunderbusses are also apparently very useful. Basically, Cawdor individually are garbage, but you get a lot of them and you can easily engineer it so that you almost never actually have to roll to hit. (That said, it seems like the House of Faith book is really what turbo-charges them, and Cawdor with just the base rulebook may be less exciting - but that seems to be true for pretty much everyone.)

One of the best parts of Necromunda (imho) is the terrain. I can't wait to see what everyone puts together.
