OK, so I'm actually going to try and call some places today.
It looks like a lot of the places nearby are closed on Sundays. How many folks could come on a Saturday in December - say, the 3rd or the 10th?

Yeah, no problem for me.
One thing you may encounter is that a lot of the event hall places I looked at would only let you book 2 months before and no earlier. Plus, you generally need to book right at the start of the month to get a room. Hopefully you'll have more luck than I did.

No other opinions? Does January work better? Nice a guy as he is, I'd hate to rent a room and have just me and Prim show up.

Dec. 3 or 10th works for me.
Later in the month I will be gone. If January is better, I could do that, too, but of course we have to wait awhile longer.
