I really do not get were any negativity is coming from. It all looks like a breath of fresh air to me.

Amen brother colqui. I'm actually thinking of getting back into 40k. Show of hands now, who else is actually excited about 6th's imminent release?

Some of it does sound good. Some of it sounds like change for the sake of change, which is fine if you are a Tzeentch cultist, but otherwise....
Anyway, I shall wait and see how things go. Not long now.

Yeah, I haven`t been too big on 40K recently (I`ve played three games - in Nagoya, and one Apocalypse in the past 8 months), but even I`m ready for a change. I`m not sure if these changes will make the game "better", but 5th edition has definitely run its course. As many have said, it seems that GW is trying to bring the rule-sets of its two flagship games (40K & WFB) into line a bit. Random assault distances, "stand-and-fire" reactions, pre-measuring, etc. are all trademarks of 8th edition WFB and now people can learn both games simultaneously - more easily. The cost of the rulebook is a downer (I`m not buying one) and, unless there is something we don`t know about it, I can see this allies chart being abused rather horrifically. But still, most of the changes we`ve read so far seem to be an attempt to make the game better (as opposed to just making the game "different" than before). As I`ve only played a grand total of one game of WFB 8th edition - I don`t know why, but that edition just killed that game in our otherwise thriving WFB community (I want to play it more, personally) - this new edition of 40K will likely be a fairly big transition for me. I welcome the challenge, but I won`t launch into it headlong since I have to wait for the mini-rulebook. Let`s see how these changes play out by actually playing some battles. Then we can cry "doom" or "woohooo!" as we feel approriate.

I...must...resist...I have to admit, I like the servo-skull tape measure! The new templates also look pretty snazzy. The new dice I can live without (maybe they are similar to the Khemri-ish dice they released for WFB before?). Does anyone have any information on the other two dice sets? One of them looks like it could be similar to the vehicle damage dice from a few years back...but the middle set? What the...? Will these things be required rules-wise for 6th edition?

The middle dice are just objective markers for the "eternal war" scenario, whatever that is. I dare say tokens or what have you would work just as well.

Gw terrain is very good, but was hit by the recent price changes quite badly. Coincidence? It will probably be possible to scratch build stuff to use in the game. Being allowed to choose what terrain you have on the table is potentially very good. Maybe it will encourage more people to put some effort into making a full terrain set.
Totally agree and hope this leads to more terrain building. While I love providing terrain for my fellow gamers, it was frustrating when I spent all my time buiding terrain for our mega battles while everyone else worked on their armies. Also wonder if FW will alter their rules slightly so you can use their gun bunkers and fortifications under the new rules.
