I'm not against special characters as they usually cost a lot. For example in the fantasy campaign I wasn't allowed Grom or Grimgor so I ended up paying points for a Lord and giving him a really good magic weapon and it worked out about 100 points cheaper than the special character. Usually you have to go without if you buy specials as they are pointed high right?

Because Dante still costs 100 points more and you are playing a 750 point tag team game where you want to take cheap characters to get the first turn?
Why take a BA captain at all? BA chaplains are a better choice, or Librarians.
Maybe you want a powerfist/stormshield combo so you can actually hurt your enemy or even inflict instant death?
Maybe you hate painting gold.
Maybe you want to model your captain on a bike.
Maybe you dont have the model.
Dante is expensive and by no means unbeatable.

Why would I want to cripple my own army like that? I guess if I was playing Apoc perhaps and could spare the points.
How did you do in that tournament anyway? I dont recall seeing your name on the list of winners? Could it be that blowing points on characters doesn't do much against a more balanced list and skillful opponents?
