Re: Codex Marines CAN take a Storm Raven
Something I hadn't noticed previously is that this official rulebook is direct sales only. That means the Ikeda-sans of this world get exactly zero income from this book. Yet, if they decide to run a tourney or other GW promoting event, all the players are going to have to buy this. If I was a retailer, I'd be pretty damn pissed at that.
The book stinks of cash cow milking. Prim - any chance of Naghammer banning everything that appears in this book?
Incidentally, @badruck - you know those Orky flyers that you have that used to have rules in that white dwarf you bought? Now they don't. Now you have to pay full retail to buy this book if you want to use them. Are we getting annoyed with GW yet?

@MIJ: It looks to me like a compendium, not a rulebook. The description says it contains the White Dwarf supplements, so if Badruck has those, he's fine. (And I have them too, if anyone ever needs a copy.)

All the chatter I read was it was a compendium. Not that MIJ is wrong about the cash cow milking. Only GW has the hutzpah to wrap a big ole hardcover on a collection of magazine articles.Tenorikuma wrote:@MIJ: It looks to me like a compendium, not a rulebook. Re: Codex Marines CAN take a Storm Raven
The only new rule in this book for the unit entries is the Storm Budgie being available to Vanilla Marines and Templars (not Wolves or Dark Angels though).
The rules are a compendium with the errata from the FAQs included as well. On top of that they have included the Dogfighting rules from Crusade of Fire which was released only a very short while ago. There may be some other bits and pieces in it (a large battle report from the sounds of it), but I wont be buying it.
Generally I have no problem with the occasional limited edition release, but between GW and Black Library it's getting to the point where the sale of their items is so restrictive that I don't want to make the effort to buy them. I used to enjoy reading the background and rules, but unless I am willing to jump through the various hoops GW has started to set out, it looks like they don't want my money any more.

Who is they? GW tournament? Why would any of us care?
As soon as the book is available on the second hand market I will pick up a copy. Guess what I read Japanese and live in Japan do the ork flyer rules I use are a free down load. From the GWJ web page.
Who cares if GW is trying to make money. That is like criticising Apple for making an I pad mini and charging people for it... Are GW not free to charge what they want for stuff if you don't like it don't buy it. Certainly there is no reason to lash out at them. It is not like you are bing forced to buy it of to play the game. I would also like to point out that the fightaboma I bought 6 moths before The dakka jet came out is a separate entery that I can use in lue of the dakka jet rules. But as the dakka jet rules are preferable I will use them.

Re: Codex Marines CAN take a Storm Raven
"They" are independent retailers, aka Friendly Local Gaming Store. A local example being Ikeda-san. I appreciate that Ikeda-san doesn't have much hobby space in his store, but plenty of flgs do have gaming space and pull in a lot of customers this way. By making it so that those same flgs cannot stock this book, GW are shafting them out of the ability to actually earn money. This move also makes it impossible for online retailers like Wayland to sell this book.
It's essentially a clear indication that GW have no interest in promoting their product in other people's shops, that those other people can go hang, and that fairly soon the ONLY way to buy GW stuff will be from their own shops or website. This, as you say, does not affect me in the slightest, as I don't actually buy their stuff, but I do, however, have a lot of sympathy for the independent stockists who are having their sales base cut out from underneath them.
Tbh, I'm just fed up of their crap. It puzzles and frustrates me how any generally sensible and fair person (eg you) can fail to be offended by their attitude to their customers and continue to swallow their crap. You are of course free to continue to so so, it's a free world and all that. It just...I dunno...makes me go "eh?"

Re: Codex Marines CAN take a Storm Raven
GW is nobody's buddy. Generally resolved to making profit while only slightly appeasing the games fans.
I think the sensible thing is not to get too stoked by the behavior of them. After all, it is out of our hands. Just accept what peace you can whether you decide to buy from them in the future or not. At least, that is my approach, IMH thoughts.
As for the flyers, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The rules, I guess it is good it is book form, but I'm not rushing out to buy it.
