Jimmy crack corn indeed.

The 'rumours' are photos of pages straight out of White Dwarf. Going by past experience, WD pictures usually don't start showing up until the product is fairly close to going on sale. Pictures of other armies haven't been seen yet, so I expect Tau to be out fairly shortly, probably before or just after NH in May.

When it drops it drops I will buy the book and the models hopefully by that time GW will have the codex on iBooks and I will most likely get that as well.

Badruck, I'm curious. I genuinely respect your opinion, which is why I'm puzzled by your seemingly impregnable tolerance of GW. Why is it that you're ok with their various business tactics/sales shenanigans?

I think i'll still be picking up the models to build as another army to go with my IG :D I'll have to watch for cheap deals though to get them sent from the US or UK :(

Warning this is just a rambling mess.

I like the product.

Compared with other hobbies it is not all that expensive. I still buy McDonald and they basically sell me heart attacks.. Plus they target kids. That is my personal health.

I am an Ork player and GW loves the Orks.

I like marines...

And I like small points games.

If you try and get 2000 point army you are looking at a really high price. If you put things in perspective a trip to the home country is twice the price and lasts a few weeks.

I used to play futsal... the uniform was over 10,000 yen and I had to pay 2000 yen a week. Foot ball boots were anything but cheap. And do not last as long as the models I have. I have had some models for 20 years. I have never had foot ball boots last for more than a few years of constant use. I used to skate board... That was a money trap too deck, trucks wheels, bearings magazines, videos, a ramp. Snow boarding. Costs more and takes more time. Camping costs more and takes more time. Hell keeping my bike in good working condition is not cheap.

If I was not in to this I would be into classic painting that costs heaps of money....
Fishingrods, reals, bate, gear, tackle-boxes,hooks,licence. Time wow are you kidding I could spend days on fishing trips.

You may say try other games.

The other game suck IMHOrkO

40k books were crap but they upped their game. GW models are second to none in the variety and explanation. That costs money.... Everyone is trying to make it. I charge people to talk to them in my native language. How crazy is that.

Indeed. 85$ U.S for a big robot model. Oh, where, where could I find a plastic robot model to proxy that for 1/3 the price?

I've gotta admit, the Riptide looks awesome. Maybe one of the best mecha models I've seen.

Economically speaking, for any given person all hobbies cost the same amount. If you have 10000 yen of disposable income a month then your hobby costs 10000 yen a month. What differs is the perceived amount of pleasure derived from that hobby. In the case of our hobby, it is difficult to pick up a whole army (ignoring the skirmish games here) in one go. So instead a player picks up something every month and builds up their army a bit at a time, maybe playing some smaller games along the way. For a hobby like Golf for example, you buy clubs and gear individually and practice at the driving range every now and again. Hobbies tend towards strange buying habits compared to other goods and services. Your internet service provider jacks up the price and you switch suppliers. The company who makes the one set of collectors items you are halfway through buying puts up their prices and you probably just grumble a bit and go on buying/playing.

The problem for us with GW is that for most of us we see the perceived value of the items decreasing as their prices increase and the rules push for more models on the table. When we look at the balance between Fun Vs. Money Spent we see an increase on one side but not necessarily the other. If you look around at other systems and manufacturers, you see the same potential level of fun but a lower figure on the Money side. GW are pushing their prices up to maximize profits against the value of their products. For some of us, e.g. Spevna, they have already gone over the Fun/Money ratio. For others, e.g. Badruck they are still within acceptable limits.

So, so long as you are still enjoying the product you spend your 10000 yen on, you will keep buying it. Obviously Badruck likes his Orks which is good for him.

I think it's interesting to read both Badruck and Prim's comments on this. Both are eminently sensible, fairly well thought out opinions. The key difference is that Badruck's largely defends the game known as 40k. Prim's is a (mild, granted) criticism of Games Workshop. These two entities are not the same thing. Clearly, looking around my room I am a chap who has no problem with miniature wargaming. 40k vs Warmafaux is not the issue here. What I do have a problem with is GW. The way they promote their products, their attitude to consumers, the sense of being taken advantage of every time I buy one of their products (which I haven't done in a long time, I might add.) The article that Konrad posted from uncyclopedia was a spoof, of course, but its description of GW wasn't too far off the mark. I simply can't believe that GW need to charge so much for their models. Nobody else sells such expensive pieces for a game that requires so many components.

I think the change in attitude can be summarised thus:

When I was a young teenager, I could go into town and buy a blister of minis with my pocket money. I could probably buy a couple of chocolate bars with the change, too. In this way, supplemented with birthday and Christmas presents, over a couple of years I collected an Eldar army large enough to contain all the models needed to play at any points level that I would reasonably be called upon to, including plenty of variation.

I do not ever see myself giving my son so much pocket money that he can buy a playable, "full size" (1500pts) 40k army, never mind one that contains all the models in any given army book.

Do you?
