Nothing wrong with close combat for killing vehicles. Why, just today I killed a Shadow Sword in hand to hand. Admittedly I did hit it with 6 S8 attacks, but if you ARE going to get into hand to hand with a tank, do it properly.
Why would you discount close combat? Its 1/3rd of the game and your odds go from 1 in 6 chance of penetrating to 5 in 6 or so if you are using a Wraithlord. That thing has to get close to use its multi meltas anyway.

Looks like a land raider with a thunder-fire cannon mounted on the front.. and multi-meltas on the sides.. I can't really see why you would worry about the Multi-meltas... but a thunder-fire cannon could make your day a bit of a bad one... just send the avatar over and have him carve it up...

(Take-with-a-grain-of-salt comment from a guy who hasn't played 40K in a while, but!)

I tend to agree with MIJ - you have to agree that there's a pretty fundamental difference between an AV12 vehicle that ignores melta / lance rules (S8 weapons - which, IIRC, make up the bulk of weapons using melta / lance rules - will still penetrate on a 5 or 6) and an AV14 vehicle that ignores melta / lance rules (S8 weapons can't penetrate at all).

Then when you look at from the PoV of an army where S8 melta / lance makes up (not the entirety, but you have to admit) the bulk of their AP ability - like, say, Eldar - and this particular vehicle looks a little rock-paper-scissors-y.

Why I discount CC against this landy:

step 1) get 3 of em
step 2) park at rear of army
step 3) whale on opposition from across the table.
step 4) wait for a long time while their avatar and wraithlord run across the board as they cant get into vehicles or outflank or anything like that. Continue to whale on em for this time period.

Yes, this costs 900 pts. But its 900 pts that will still be on the table at the end of the game. A coupla tac squads, a cheap captain, and whatever other squad you fancy for deep striking or jump packing onto objectives (for denial).

boring, but a damn near guaranteed win.

Such things are an abomination and should not be. Much like Justin Bieber. In fact, from now on, I'm gonna call this the Bieber variant land raider :twisted:

I would never say any list is guaranteed win...
These tanks are boss and they will plow over an ork army just about as fast as they will and Eldar or dark Eldar army.. but when they come up on a Tau army they are in for a kicking Broad sides would love what they can do to these guys not to mention the Path finder EMP squad that come in from the side.. the other thing is if you lock up with a group of marines in CC and stay with them you can't really get shot by these things....
