At any rate, Ikeda-san seems set on kicking off 6th edition with steep discounts on the rulebook and/or starter set.

Since it looks like the starter may be further off than expected, here are some rumours about upcoming rules changes to mull over.
From various folks on Warseer.
-Random Charges are 2D6 pick the highest (unless going through Difficult Terrain where its 3D6 and you drop the highest.) Move through cover I believe adds an extra D6
-Vehicles are WS0 if stationary, and WS1 if they move, no matter how far they go.
-Vehicles go the same distance in the movement phase (I believe 6" and fire everything regardless if fast or not) but in the shooting phase can make an extra move (apparently some kept forgetting what vehicles moved to fast to fire...
-Vehicles cannot contest (unsure if scoring units in transports can
-6 Missions and 3 deployment types (2 of the deployments are the same as current, Spearhead & Pitched Battle.)
-Troops are the only ones that can score (including of course 'scoring units')
-5+ Cover save for most things (ruins are 4+).
-Allies rules are in, but its meant to be for team games (ie separate force org chart, distrusted ally rules similar to Fantasy)
-Percentages are *not* in
-Wound Allocation is closest to furthest.
-Dueling is similar to challenges in fantasy but contrary to earlier rumors, they don't replace Combat res, just add to sides. A IC can challenge another IC in the same combat even if not in base to base. If the defending IC refuses, he simply cannot attack that turn, if he does he counts as being in b2b and no one else can hurt him apart from the attacking IC. I'm guessing this is to offset the Wound Allocation rules
-Preferred Enemy is including shooting and you may reroll wound rolls of a 1 (either shooting or combat)
-Rapid Fire weapons may now can shoot at long range while moving. restriction on assaulting after rapid firing remains.
-Jump Infantry get a free strike at I10 when they charge into combat
-Psychic Power Decks using a dice system similar to Fantasy.
-Flyers are in.
-AP are on ccw but he says power weapons are ap 2, not 3.
-When you charge it's double your move, infantry move 6, bikes 8 cav 7 etc.
-It's move assault then shooting now!
-Fnp is 5+. Master crafted ccw give you a 5+ invuln save
-When you shoot you roll to hit depending on the speed of your target. Fast vehicles you always need a 6.
-A unit can't claim a object while inside a vehicle.
-There's new kinds of instance death. If your say strengh 8 vs a space marine captain toughness 4
you only do 2 wounds! Strengh (9?) or more would do 3 wounds & kill him.
-In kill point missions you get kill points based on what the units points cost, so for example a
landraider would be worth 5 kill points & a unit of marines 3pts.
Big changes ahead by the looks of things.

According to these rumours:
Fast transports are now lame.
Tyranid Warriors and other 2 wound T4 units just got a LOT better.
Close Combat IC's (Abadabadon, Mephiston, etc) just got even better.
DAVU's aren't such a good choice anymore.
Jump Infantry got much better. (Time for me to bring out my Ravenguard methinks).
We're returning to the days of Dark Millenium for the psychic phase.....dang.

Sooooooo

Eldar got major nerf. (fast transport:nerf. CC ICs - don't have any. Jump pack assaults - don't have any. Multiple wound T4 - don't have any. Dueling - brilliant - SM chars can now butcher eldar chars even more efficiently. Psychic powers, the one thing other than fast transports that eldar had going for them have been made generic across armies, flyers - don't have any.)

*shrug* didn't care much about new 40k before, care even less now.

Is there any chance we can all just stop wasting our time with this game and either stick with 5th Ed or just leave it for a bit and have a couple of years of "screw you GW we's a-gonna play warmachine/Malifaux/FoW/Talisman/blood bowl/epic/space hulk/battle for alabaster/heck, chess."????

On the bright side, Swooping Hawks got better?

We'll still have to wait and see how all these things pan out once the book arrives. I'm sure as soon as you get a new book full of pointy eared space elf 'we're betterer than you' goodness you'll be feeling chipper again. :D :D
If it's a good game then it will be popular, if not then other games will be in the ascendency. After all the time, money and effort I have sunk into the game I am still going to have a crack at playing it before I decide to forget about it for the next 4 years.

Yeah. It is hard to give a game we've been player for decades. It was a hard decision for me but easy once I made it.
For the best thing about 40k is that so many people play it. So u can always find an opponent no matter where you go. That and you knew that it wasn't a passing fad so your minis wouldn't become completely useless in a few years.

That's the question, really. Are we playing 40k because we get something from it, or are we playing it because we've got too much already sunk into it. If the latter is true, surely we need to reassess our priorities?

Both.

I spent time and money but also I enjoy the odd game every month or so.

I'm a newbie, so my opinion doesn't really count, but I've begun playing 40K because the quantity and quality of miniatures (especially when you include out-of-production models), the wide variety and flexibility of factions and themes, the ubiquity of the game compared to others, GW's commitment to the hobby aspect (painting, sculpting, terrain, etc.), and the depth and richness of the fictional world the game inhabits blow other sci-fi miniature games out of the water. Same goes for Fantasy. I like actual gaming too, but how elegant and balanced the rules are is one of the least of my concerns; I spend far, far more time on the hobby than on the game.

I suspect MIJ feels the same way and cares deeply about 40K, or he wouldn't spend most of his waking hours complaining about it here. :D

Just because you are new doesn't make your opinion any less valid. I agree that Warhammer (both flavours) have a lot going for them in terms of what is available. In terms of current models, older stuff on ebay and also 3rd party stuff. Whilst there may be things we dont like about the game/company, the amount of choice available is amazing.
