My thoughts on allies are simple <long rant censored by moderator>

Re: Allies yes or Allies no?
Ah yes, for my demons I can just ship my old chaos marines over and play them. Oh wait, they are Iron Warriors who basically have given everyone in the universe the finger and don't use demons so the fluffy suddenly becomes unfluffy unless I repaint them into something else. Bah.
Let's look at this from a different prespective. I've got two armies under 1500 pnts; demons and necrons. I also have a huge army, IG. Sounds good doesn't it? IG allies with demons and necrons so I can add those two to my IG or use IG to up my demons and necrons to a higher point level. having multiple armies means I have just that many more tactical and 'fluffy' options to build a variety of armies.
For me however, it actually feels like a punishment. First because I chose two small armies that aren't allowed to ally, I am stuck with the giant boring machine that is IG. I haven't been interested in playing my guard since the new codex came out and nothing I have read in 6th has made me want to bring it out. In fact, it has made me even more seriously consider selling most of it. Which would put me in an even harder spot to try and muster even one army to try and go against all the new things I'd have to face. Now I use to have 'nids, blood angels, and grey knights but I sold those due to the sheer number of armies, lack of time, price of building them up, and general need for money. So now my decision seems like an even bigger kick in the nuts than before as I had more options and might even be able to join in the idea making everyone else has.
Bah.

Re: Allies yes or Allies no?
Cheerful this evening, ain't we
Sure, yeah - so you were unlucky and painted your CSM as iron warriors. So they don't use daemonic allies? Fine. Don't use allies for em. Stick with the fluff, and stick to yer guns. Iron within, iron without. That said, some IG allies for your iron warriors, maybe a bunch of basilisks or other such siege tanks would be very fluffy.
As for your crons, personally I don't think crons should ally with anyone. I know the rules say they can, but as an evil, completely nihilistic race bent on annihilating all life from the galaxy, they don't seem the chummy types.
Just because you can doesn't mean you have to ally, not even if you want to win. My dark eldar and my craftys are goin to remain pretty stand alone. My corsairs, otoh, are going to have allies up the wazoo, but that's because it's so fluffy it's actually built into the army list (craftworlders and dark eldar are elite choices for corsairs. With the 6th ed allies rules it just means I can mix and match even more. For those of you worried about me power gaming, I intend to take vypers as my craftworlders contingent. Fear ye not...)
As for not wanting to be overwhelmed with models to paint, that's up to you. You don't want em? Don't take em. It's like I've said before (I'm getting like a stuck record, I know). The allies rules are fine. How the individual chooses to use them is what determines if they are fun or not. The ball's in your court, chief. Do with it as you will

If I had time, I'd do some kind of jungle expeditionary force with Catachan guard and Orks.

Anyways back on subject, I guess I could go on a large rant and I'm sure you'd all call me a looney and whinner. I guess you should think about this from a new person's point of view about the huge plethora of things that they have to worry about now over what they use to.

Re: Allies yes or Allies no?
@vossy - a newbie has nothing more to worry about now than he or she did a month, year or decade ago. What the game makes available to you as a player is not "what you must buy". It's all optional. There is no perfect list, there is nothing you "need". There is only what you want. If you want it and can afford it, buy it. If you dont want it or cant afford it, dont buy it. It's that simple.*
@baduck - repeat after me: "i want those and I can afford them, so I will buy them"
(yes, OK, they are quite cool, actually...)
*as an example: In the new 40k book there is an allies chart. Said chart contains details of who Eldar (amongst others) can ally with. Who can Eldar ally with? Y'know - I don't actually know. Despite having access to the full new rulebook, I dont know who eldar can ally with. Why dont I know? Because I haven't even looked. Why haven't I looked? Because I dont care. My eldar arent going to ally with anybody, because I dont want em to. End of story. Everybody else can turn up with Eldar guns backed up by Space Wolf assault squads, or BA death company. Fine, let em. My eldar don't ally because I say so.
On the flip side, I'm assuming my corsairs can ally with my Dark Eldar and my Craftworlders. If they book says they cant, I'm gonna do it anyway (with opponent consent, of course). i happen to have Dark Eldar, Craftworlders and Corsairs and I think it'd be fun and fluffy to play them together. I don't have Blood Angels or Tau or Orks or whatever. So, even if the books says my eldar can ally with em, I say they cant. It's a game. Do with it what you want, not what the rulebook tells you to.
