If you are going to play a Space Marine army, use Codex Space Marines.

If you are going to play a Blood Angels or Blood Angels successor chapter, use Codex Blood Angels.

There are differences between them but you should follow what is written in the codex you are using on that day. Don't compare the SM and the BA codices are they are different. I know it seems a bit strange that Blood Angels (who are basically red space marines) should have different rules from regular space marines regarding equipment but thats just how they have been written (for reasons beyond me).

The Blood Angels PDF from WD is now outdated and the book version takes precedence.

Hope this helps :)

As you have found, the pdf is now out of date. This happens eventually to all GW stuff. For example, I play eldar. The eldar codex was released in 2006, and is still current, as there has not been a more recent eldar book released. As soon as a new eldar codex is released, all previous versions become null and void, and may not be used anymore (unless you fancy playing a retro game against someone, but thats a special case.)

The current edition of the Blood Angels rules are in a book, not a pdf, which was released earlier this year.

Also, there are differences in rules between the SM codex, the BA codex, and the SW codex, quite possibly for the same piece of equipment. Thats why its important to pick a codex and stick with it. You cannot use item A from codex A and item B from codex B in the same army. Codecii are entirely self-contained, and should not be mixed and matched.

Finally, you'll be pleased to see, the new BA rules are much better.

I'll throw you a bone and say that there are pdf versions of all the rulebooks floating around on the internet. Theyre not legal, and GW doesnt like em, but there are brave souls out there who scan/photograph entire codex books and upload them to torrent sites. This is why most everyone on this site seems to know all the rules for all the armies - we have all the books (on pdf...)

I cant say any more, I can see Prim coming - quick! put on your disguise! :ugeek:

The Japanese Web page and a few other laguages have PDF... Japanese gamers get the codex for free and it is all with in the law.. so if you have great Japanese you can pick up the Codex for every army...

I split off the next few pages as it was not relevant to Seb's initial question.

link: here

This applies as much to me as to anyone else, but please try to only give constructive advice that directly deals with the question asked, and remember that Seb (and the other new guys) dont know one end of a bolter from the other. Try to keep advice clear and easy to follow. While its possible they may want to completely redesign the game of 40k from the ground up, I suspect that what is really wanted is a basic intro to the game.

Thank you.

@ Seb - my apologies for the blatant thread hijacking. It happens here from time to time. Someone asks an innocent question about starting their own chapter, some folks give their advice, Badruck says something daft, people call him on it, he gets more defensive (and even dafter) and its all downhill from there... :?

anyway, sorry...

ok, perhaps daft was not the best word. It was, however, extremely easy to misunderstand, which is why a lot of people (myself included) got a hold of the wrong end of the stick.

Anyway, for debate and discussion of the relative merits of a multi purpose marine army, see here. For advice for Seb on how to start up a new marine army, stick with this thread.

Cheers, m'dears. :D  :ugeek:

No probs, just happy to get a lot of good answers and ideas from you all.
I'm sure that I'll have a chapter to be satisfied with.
