Back on topic, I've only had stuff stopped by customs and taxed once and that was when my parents sent me a box of winter clothes my first year here. I had to pay 3500 yen for the privilege of having my old sweaters sent to me. Since then I have never had a problem. However, since tax in Japan is only 5% it shouldn't be too much even if they do stop something.
