The Fallen

Okay, so no surprise, but I've been hinting that I want to make a The Fallen-themed Chaos army. I'm looking to have Chaos equipment with DA bitz and some converted models mixed to create a theme of a band of desperate and motley renegades, at least that is the idea.
So, a few things come to mind that I'm looking for counsel on or help:
1) Anybody have a copy of the the fallen angel 40k novel? Could I borrow it to read? I'm not a huge fan of the fluff, but I want to get some ideas for the company.
2) I've found the warhammer40k.wikia.com sites page on The Fallen, along with other threads debating color schemes, but really the pre-heresy Black-white trim scheme really looks terrible because, well after the fact it is the scheme for the Black Templars (where it looks good with the crusader-monastic theme), it is just far too plain. Anyway, my last band of Chaos were the Black Legion and I'd like to try painting something other then black.
Most painters/artists seem to choose other schemes immediately. There is a Black and silver scheme (which is actually the Chaos BL) and of course other models painted with really dark layers of Dark Angel Green. I like this scheme because it maintains that contrast to the Dark Angels.
Any thoughts? Anybody seen a good scheme?
3) Got bitz or DA models?

to paint up a pre-heresy DA, but I know you said you didnt want to do black.

It gets you the new DA Green and the old DA Black all rolled into one.

I like the second scheme. While I don't think blocks of uniform green and black is good, maybe some kind of second layer of hastily applied DA green over black? I kind of want the band to waiver and vary in their various dedication to Chaos or Redemption.
