a cautionary tale

today, Prim was kind enough to come down to Tsu for some mali, 40k, and warmachine at chez Dave. Mali was an educational game, with me taking control of his showgirls, getting all confuzled to hell, and losing. Fair enough. Theyre a rather complex group of young ladies, but once the hang is gotten of em, could be ace.

40k was...

hmmn, well. He came loaded for bear, put it that way.

To make matters worse, I was fielding an army composed entirely of bear :(

I (purely for novelty value, i assure you. I did warn him it'd be wierd beforehand) brought:

1 farseer (well of course)
2 squads of 10 wraithguard with concealspiritseers
1 wraithlord
1 wraithseer (FW thingey)
5 shadow spectres (FW thingeys)
1 hornet (FW thingey)
1 Warp Hunter (FW thingey)

Note the running theme of A) D-cannon wielding dead things, and B) FW thingeys.

He turned up with:
A fancypants Mantis Warriors named char from IA10
5 termis with TH and SS in a Landy
5 sternguard
10 marines in rhino with Pgun and Pcannon
7 bikers with 2 melta
7 bikers inc a cap'n
2 attack bikes w multimelta

picture if you will, the carnage inflicted by his highly mobile, melta and plasma gun toting army, against my highly immobile, reliant on high T and good armor save army.

and then his termies charged me. BOTH wraithguard units over 2 turns. If there's one place WG dont want to be, its in H2H with THSStermies.

dearie, dearie me. OK, I wasnt actually expecting to win with my wierdy army, but blooey, dat was quick and painful.

as for warmachine, well, it couldve gone either way, but just before my ripjaw and cankerworm could charge his caster, one of his (jacks? mortars?) got in a lucky hit that done in morty (he got 6,6,5 for damage rolls). Meh, it happens sometimes :)

So, thank you to Prim for coming, and let all who would play wierdy cheesy 40k armies be warned: Prim'll get ya!

Yep, those Showgirls will confuzle you alright.

It was Black Ivan, my new 'jack. And it was a bleedin' lucky shot given that an entire 2 turns worth of shooting, (packed into 1 turn thanks to my caster), missed.

As Badruck will testify, my Mantis Warriors churn out a good deal of plasma and melta, as they were meant to take on his Scorpions back when BoLS ran their Badab War campaign.

Thanks for inviting me, and if I can just paraphrase the quote in your sig:
Sometimes when you bring wierdy cheese to the game your opponent just makes himself a wierdy sandwich.

In all fairness, M_i_J's army had some outstanding flaws. An almost complete lack of manourverability and speed coupled with an average range of 12" on his guns. When he did fire, he killed what he shot at, but due to having the Infiltrate USR as a chapter tactic (on bikes no-less) he never got that opportunity. At no point was I worried about my objective being contested (we played capture and control), and M_i_J castled his units up on one edge of the board allowing me to plonk my bikes down wherever I pleased. From the beginning of the game I was able to dictate the game. It is incredibly rare to face an Eldar army that can't run rings around you, and I am sure M_i_J will make me pay for it next time. :D

Ouch, yeah that would hurt.

Interesting though how only the Red Scorpions got singled out for special consideration. Then again if you got within 12 inches of my Minotaurs, you were mincemeat.

No offence intended, but simply, you didnt have Feel No Pain in every squad. :D I needed lots of guns that would deny that extra save against Badruck. The fact that they would also work on Minotaurs or, in this case, Wraithguard is a bonus.

I actually don't remember you getting that many shots off against me with melta or plasma to have made much of a difference.
